I grew up on the Mornington Pen, dairy farm near Tyab but we left when I was about 4. Too cold for me now though BTW, if anyone knows of the Minns family, I'd love to get in touch again.

Mornington Peninsula is another country True I call it utopia! Utopia? I call that normalcy bias, Franga [Frankston] is already in SHTF, I grew up there and if you're within 15 clicks.... ---- Here's the spreadsheet, I've only done Melbourne, you can plug in the sun's hours for other locations, though if annoyed enough I'll look them up, already took me a few hours SolarPower.xlsx (16.28 KB)

Great spreadsheet, at the moment I'm waiting for christmas to get the stuff I ordered from Jaycar "From my parents"... I can wait a week for some free stuff haha and then I need to get a relay and a fuse then rig up the light on my car. If that goes smoothly, I'll be beginning to plan a second battery with solar and alternator charging that will power a fridge and some more lighting as well as some extra charging plugs.
Then after the hilux is sorted, I'll look at doing a small solar set up for the house. But from the looks of things, it doesn't seem too hard. I just have no idea how big I can afford to make it and what sort of output I really need.

The only old local family I know of are the "agar" family. If you have an address I can drive by and see if there are names around on fences etc.

Thanks Fractus. No way I can remember an address but it was a no-through road and the name "Jones Rd" rings a bell. Looking at the map I see that Jones Rd is not no-through but there are lanes running off it that could fit the bill. I'll look on Google Earth, pretty sure I'll recognise the farm in a photo if I see it.

OK, pretty sure I found it, 15 Seaview Rd Tyabb, man has that changed in 55 years Our farm is now a stack of houses. It seems they no longer live there and as all their kids were girls who have probably changed names I think I'm out of luck. I actually found their phone # on the web but it must be old, the current holders of that # have no idea.

I forgot to include the recommended "Solar Panel Regulator Charge Controller" capacity in A, which is easy to work out by working out the total maximum output of your panels in Watts divided by Voltage. So my system is 120W of panel, divided by 12V, equals 10A (Amps = Watts / Amps). From there, you purchase a regulator that has a little more capacity than your panels and preferable a MPPT controller as they are more efficient.
I've not put my system together yet and I'm waiting on parts to arrive though, it's just a small portable one, something I can roll out in the morning [chained up] and roll back in the evening. My power requirements aren't high, just charging batteries, charging phones/radios and running/charging laptops.
120W Panel, 15Amp Regulator-controller, 70Amp AGM battery, a trolley and I've not decided on an inverter yet* It's for LED lighting {12Wh/day}, charging phones{14Wh/day}/radios{18Wh/day} and the occasional laptop/power tool. I'm very much energy positive. I've also got an exercise bike [spin bikes have a suitable flywheel] though realistically you don't get a lot of energy from them [50W or so, and you get hot] and your caloric expenditure means more food required, so a net loss of calories.

...I've not decided on an inverter yet... Sinergex make good and simple true sine wave inverters. I've used a few over the years and just bought an new one (1000w) for a small solar system I have installed in the containers. ...your caloric expenditure means more food required, so a net loss of calories. Good point. Generating electricity like this might be fun and good exercise if you have nothing else to do and plenty of food, but in a survival situation your energy is better spent on more productive pastimes I think.

I had a look Gray. All built out, and the new house looks about 15 years plus.

Thanks, they are still phone listed at #15 according to one web site but these things are often well out of date, I was there about 20 years ago, they had moved up the hill from the old farm even then, Mr & Mrs Minns were pretty old then and as I said the daughters will have long moved out and changed surnames. No matter, maybe they'll search for me one day, I'm easy to find on the web.
