Good points paranoia, I'd miss my solar setup but we can (and do) cook with wood and have interests (like blacksmithing) that don't require power, also a heap of manual tools. That said maybe it's worth putting a few things in a cage, my CBs, a laptop and external drives, one of my spare inverters for example. In short come up with a subset of my gear that will allow me to still function in a small way electronically. Bear in mind if this happens we'll be too busy to sit around playing on computers.

I listened to a radio show the other featured an astronomist, among other things talking about CMEs and solar flares. According to the show, the latest research shows that while a CME would knock-out the electrical grid in seconds, it wouldn't necessarily impact anything that wasn't plugged into the grid at the time it hit. So, if you're phone is charging via mains electricity, then it would be dead. But if it was on your person, or charging off a battery etc, then it shouldn't be affected. Also, in contravention of info I've seen on several prepper sites, landline phones would also be dead, as they would be fried by the charge down the grid. (Landlines can be used in normal blackouts though)
Of course, the grids would all be dead for a very long time, basically until all the hardware could be replaced, so any phones / computers etc that weren't affected would be unchargeable unless you had a decent off-grid battery. Lack of wifi and mobile signal would also render them useless anyway.

(Landlines can be used in normal blackouts though) Although with so many cordless phones - and business phone systems plugged in to a server - landlines would be pretty much unusable unless you have an old-school phone. I also doubt landlines would work in Australia once the NBN takes over completely...
