I keep heaps of junk in my car, but I drive 700km every 2 weeks. Some items to consider, this will all fit in a cloth shopping bag bar the blanket: - first aid
- cloth dust masks (fire, or terror type attack, chem incident)
- water bottle that can boil water in or life straw.
- Perhaps a small tarp or large plastic sheet.
- Food is not required (instant noodles and tin tuna) depending where you are if trapped in snow or young children a different story
- hat,
- shaded safety glasses,
- Walking shoes if you are the kind of person to go out in high heels.
- Matches/lighter
- Wind up torch/radio Got a wind up torch for $3 at office works, a one handed job
- Multitool
- Cordage
- Duck tape
- Security and vehicle access or exit !! (axe, hammer, breaching tool combo see image below), can get a 450mm crow bar at Bunnings for $6
Also consider: - Cash,
- Maps??
- jacket or blanket depending on climate
- fire extinguisher
- Fly net, fly's get irritating after a while
- battery bank for mobile and USB devices
- Portable jet pack to fly home above the traffic & spare jet fuel
Think on the survival rule of three's, You can survive for 3 Minutes without air (oxygen) or in icy water. You can survive for 3 Hours without shelter in a harsh environment (unless in icy water) You can survive for 3 Days without water (if sheltered from a harsh environment) You can survive for 3 Weeks without food Bought my wife a small $20 axe, hammer breaching tool combo at a camp shop this last week for her car. I suppose it has a security application as well.

Pretty comfortable with about a 10kg load , so it a light - medium pack , water being the heaviest, there's a 800ml SS bottle and a 2lt bladder there . It's a bit lite on food , but you won't starve in 72hrs . knives are Ka-Bar Kukri & Ka-Bar Short , as BOB knives thay don't get much use as I have a few others as working knives .

That's why I don't keep a machete in my GHB. I really don't need a weapons charge...

Not sure why you would need anything more than a multitool blade or small pocket knife myself. If you felt you needed something bigger you could get a fishing knife and leave it with a rod and tackle in your car to help avoid a ticket for unlawfull carriage of a knife. I never carry a blade in my car. I might have a multi tool on my belt though. I do how ever have a 6 "D" cell mag light sitting beside the driver seat of my car. The light out put is secondary to its real purpose. Already had the boys in blue spot it and just smile. I would also not carry cams. I would carry plain earthy based coloured clothing.

I have a benchmade 551 on me whenever I have lawful reason to, which is most of the time.

I have a hatchet hooked on the side of my bag. But my bag sits next to a tool box and tool bag so I'm not too worried about it. Plus I myself am not too worried about the cops pulling me over and searching my car. A Leatherman multitool and a folder knife is all else I need.

The machete is a handy tool but having one safely in the car these days probably depends on where you live and the type of car.
I have one in my car, but its a Jeep that goes off road, along with other off road gear, tools, camping gear etc. I'd love for a cop to tell me it has no purpose in the car etc.
Its completely different though if you live in the city with a standard car and are driving around with a machete. In this case you would likely be in trouble.

Great point. I could accordingly argue my need to carry bolt cutters and wire cutters as they're next to some reo bar and tie Wire in my 4wd. Having a hard hat also covers a multitude of sins...

I looked into that question of legality of knives in cars so my GHB is in a locked toolbox in boot , my middle son goes to TAFE and his kitchen knives are in a locked box in his pack when traveling The law seems to view how Accessible a knife is to your person , the only knife I ever carry in public is a SAK Climber .

Your right steampunk. It depends on the state you live in and what laws there are and also the cop who is interpreting the law. If the cop wants to take the gear he can. It may not be right to do so and you might get them back later but its up to the cop on the spot. Good idea to keep it out of site and locked up. Lessons the chance of a problem.
