I'm reminded of a certain recipe for "cake" my mother made when I was a child. I don't know how she did it, but somehow we ended up with a disc of "chocolate cake" in our schoolbags that were about 10" diameter and about 1/2" thickness and about 1/2kg of weight. Fortunately they had the aerodynamics of a Frisbee. Which was in fact unfortunate for anyone who got hit in the head by one.

I have a baking can... It's the same size as a can of beans But has a lid at the top and bottom. It's for making boiled fruit cake. My nana gave it to me when My parents started my glory box. Lol hope chest. Words that aren't used today. I don't think anyone has a glory box any more. Anyways it makes amazing cakes in the shape of a log. Have never used it for a boiled fruit cake. Kind regards..😊..cookie

Trying the OP recipe, but without the smoke flavour as nobody in my town has any liquid smoke flavours in stock atm. Will tell you how it goes tomorrow. Will be the first thing to go through my new dehydrator.

It does change the flavour, but used a smoked item in the marinade. Smoked paprika, smoked garlic, smoked chillies. It can add the smokiness to the flavour.

My dehydrator has stopped making heat when the temp is set on anything, just seems to be blowing room temp. Did I get a did unit?

If you're making jerky don't worry about the temperature. You're trying to dry it, not cook it.
But yes, it sounds like a dud.

So will I need to leave it in longer if that's the case? Found out the missus turned it off at the wall then back on mistaking the plug for the rice cooker and it didn't work after that, just the fan not the heater

Oh, just dry the jerky dammit. As long as there's enough acidity in the marinade - and you marinated it long enough - there's minimal chance that you'll die a slow and painful death from botulism. In truth, the chances are pretty low to start with, but the low pH will make it pretty much impossible.
I accept no liability for this advice, btw...

Good news, the place I bought it is going to send me a new unit as soon as I send them a picture of the power cord cut in half as proof of destruction. So looks like my dehydrating adventures will wait until next week
