Just wondering how many folk on here hunt/fish/trap and harvest their meat on a regular basis if not always?
The reason for my question here is to ascertain how many preppers either raise and harvest their own meat, or fish, hunt, or trap and harvest their own meats to help me understand what type of pressure on game and wildlife might be out their in a food shortage situation.
Is there anyone who has put themselves out there and provided meat for a time from hunting or fishing for a large family or their group?

I *used* to process my own chickens... have done may 10 in my life.
I *used* to go free diving / spearfishing on a regular basis and have had far more success catching fish whilst in the water than standing on the shore or jetty.
I committed to cutting down on meat about 16 months ago however & I haven't killed in about 12 months. I'm sure I could if myself or my family was really hungry but I don't on a regular enough basis to ever rely on it as a source of food.

I used to shoot when I was in my late teens, but only targets. Also did some fishing and marroning around that time, but never got much practice at it. Done a bit of foraging for wild veg / slash edible weeds, however, again don't know much about either.
Have lately been seeing people doing a lot of fishing in local waterways, and being pretty successful in a short amount of time just by putting a net the whole way across the mouths of local streams. Then again, while they were able to catch a meal or two in a half hour, I don't know that I'd particularly want to be eating fish caught in the filthy stinking canals these people like fishing in.

Only hobby farm but do pigs lambs and chickens-also beef in past Also hunt regularly Big veggie patches and fruit trees- very neglected Excess meat we send to our kids in town Although we're not self sufficient and the veggie patch seems always a battle against neglect, the infrastructure is there to ramp up if shtf- eg have 2 breeding sows, rooster s incubators Solar irrigation dehydrators pressure canners Can't do everything when you're working but tlhe framework is there if necessary

Grew up fishing freshwater lakes, streams and ponds, and ocean from shore and boat.
Have done some survival camping on islands in the Atlantic, but it was usually fish, clams, scallops and wild fruits and vegetables that sustained us.

Can hunt land based and air based animals Can fish from land, boat or under water (free diving or scuba) Can build the traps and trap animals
I can clean and fillet fish with out much hassle but the others I've never really cleaned them up, just provided. I know enough to get it done though I'm sure.
Never slaughtered any farm animals, still its just like the above.

Don't get the opportunity to fish (tho can and have done it a bit), hunt and harvest and trap. But mostly only trap foxes 😂 definitely not to eat just to keep them in check especially as we are lambing now.

I can fish, used to be a regular thing but the nearest fish bearing water is 250km away now :-( We do a fair bit of hunting for rabbits and kangaroos, mainly for pest control but for meat as well.
I am most definitly not proficirnt in trapping and am more likely to end up getting trapped by my own damn trap.
In terms of our own meat we have pigs and chickens and are working on the infrastructure for goats and sheep over the next 12 months

Been hunting since about 5yrs old - and can dress most game. Fishing no worries - but the only traps I have used are yabbie nets, so I could not set a snare/trap for fish. I do have a few rabbit traps also, decorations only - illegal to use nowadays.
Have never really raised stock for food, except for a few goats - 1 died, and gave away the other to a farmer.
Could find game if I needed to, though in the country, there are a LOT of people who can hunt & fish, so it will be a fair old competition for game.

...I have a friend who lives 10 minutes from me, her yard is invaded by up to 10 wild deer on a regular basis... Easier to just go to the shop. I'm guessing venison is a lot cheaper over east than here in Perth... I'd certainly put in a day's work for a whole deer or ten.

Well said. This is something that a lot of people don't realize, even in the burbs and yet can yield a lot of food, rough waterways, drain areas in certain spots etc. Best to get your experience now, even if you are putting the fish, yabbies or eels back whilst you have food. It's the practice people need NOW! To deal with concerns of eating something from bad water, put it in a bath or large bucket of good water for a day or two whilst still alive, this will clean the animal out and ready it for eating. I have eaten various things from worrying water straight however, carp etc, no issues, its all in the preparation.

Has anyone considered the birds that frequent their yard for immediate food in a societal collapse?

Has anyone considered the birds that frequent their yard for immediate food in a societal collapse? For the past 24 mths, I've laid out bird seed in the back yard for the sparrows - I won't say they are tame, but not as jumpy. I had a neighbour from Malta years ago who would set out seeds, then have a large net to catch the birds - the finches he sold, and he ate the sparrows. I figure once I get the net set up, and try it out a few times, I could get a feed or two.

In Australia my bug out gun is an air rifle with a few thousand pellets. Have mouse traps as well that are good for catching birds.

I hunt as regularly as I can (maybe once every 2 mths atm) I fish when I can, but not having a boat and being 200km from the ocean slows that down, and no boat makes it hard to hit up the damns out the back of town. I've been taught to trap wild dogs, but haven't invested in my own trapping gear yet. Living in a small unit limits what I can do as far as keeping chickens and having a decent veggie patch going, but that may soon change come Dec if I can secure a house to buy, one I've got picked out has a huge backyard and sitting on 900sqm so heaps of space to setup large gardens, although not quite the 10acres I really want

I've just done the one pig. That was in April and I'm there's still some in my freezer, in fact I'm having some pork chops from it tonight (marinated in locally made marmalade). Keen to do more, definitely.
As for suburban birds, I've got my bow for quiet hunting if it came to that and I didn't want to attract attention.

I love fishing but haven't done any for about a year.... I have a large freshwater dam a leisurely 5 minute stroll from my front door.... I haven't tried to fish the dam yet (on private land) luckily it is tucked away behind my house so not seen from the main road and not many people know it exists! I grow veggies and have lots of unusual fruit trees but due to the 40 degree summer most of the fruit cooked on the trees this year. For protein I have eggs and chickens, as much as I would love a cow or two I just don't have the room however the farmer at the bottom of the hill has jerseys and I'm sure in a SHTF situation I might have some items to trade
