strop2: The numbers in Vietnam are still around 20 for the virus but most other gov'ts are hiding numbers due to tourism, and exporting. I expect cover ups to stop shortly and we will see how bad it is.

Joey: A couple of UNI's in Aust are so desperate to get their cashed up Chinese students back on campus that they are offering to pay them $1400 cash for them to travel to a third country for the 14 days before being allowed into Aust
Feb 21, 2020 19:54:05 GMT 10
Joey: This is a loophole they discovered in the gov's ban on direct flights from China and now they must spent 14 days in Thailand or another country that has yet to ban flights from China and are paying for their hotels/spending
Feb 21, 2020 19:55:27 GMT 10
SA Hunter: When you consider most of their income comes from Chinese students, no wonder they will do whatever they can to have them enrolled - I mean, money is more important that people's safety.

Vietnam culled more than 1.7 million pigs as African swine fever spread across the country, with officials warning the disease may penetrate sizable commercial farms next.
About 5% of the nation’s pig population has been culled as the number of infected provinces and cities increased to 42, the government said on its website. The epidemic will likely continue expanding to other locations and bigger farms, according to the agricultural ministry’s forecasts.
ATM is a bonus for our pork producers, as SE Asia is filling the void with our pork - just means we will have to pay more, and there may not be as much around as usual. with the price of meat lately, pork is about 50% of our meat diet. I see another big hunting trip on the cards.
Apparently running rampant in S Africa at the moment as well. I wonder what the chances are of it jumping home.
Also what the chances are of it mutating and going Zoonotic?
The chances of it becoming established here in live pigs are very high. Live virus is being regularly detected in meat products at our borders. Ag departments and biosecurity agencies all over oz are running 'war games' in anticipation of an outbreak. South Australia ran its war game a couple of weeks ago.
Given the difficulties already being experienced trying to stamp out ILT in the commercial chicken population ... I really don't want to see ASF establish a bridgehead here. Heaven help the industry if it gets into the feral pig population because it will create a permanent reservoir for re-infection. I see pork possibly becoming a luxury meat for the foreseeable future until ASF vaccines become available.
It is regarded as harmless to humans. But it shares some traits with the Pox viruses which have been highly dangerous to humans. Expect the unexpected!
If it jumps species ... stay away from large holes in the ground lest the authorities bury you as a control measure. (see my live burials thread)
I'm thinking the authorities in Asia are now attempting to reach the wrong objective. Probably it is now best to let the disease take its course and collect the animals that survive due to their natural resistance and use their genetics to rebuild a more swine fever resistant national herd/drove. Burying everything in sight before it dies may now be counter productive.
I also can't help but wonder what authorities will do when eventually a disease outbreak like ASF shows up in the human population.
