Remember the DefCon system?
The United States' DEFCON (short for "defense readiness condition") scale is a measure of the level of alertness of the nation's defense forces. The DEFCON scale uses a minimum of 5 (for normal peacetime status) and a maximum of 1 (for situations of global severity, like nuclear war)
I have a floating level of 'PrepCon' alert that I use to guide final preparations for expected significant disruptions.
From 2004-2008 I wast in PrepCon 2 In 2008-2009 I hit PrepCon 1 2010-2011 Decending from prepcon 2 to 4 From 2012 to last week I have been sitting at PrepCon 5
This week I've stepped back up to PrepCon 4. Bought some extra bags of premium coffee beans, topped off the fuel supply, bought a pair of hiking shoes I don't need yet, a bunch of good quality used clothes I don't need yet. Also some bicycle tubes (The 8 I had in storage had cracked).
QUESTION: Where level are YOU at? What do you do at that level?

I started out in 2013 PrepCon 2, by 2018 to PrepCon 4/5. Now, back to about PrepCon 3. Making a more concerted effort to increase my preps, and a more deeper effort to complete my bol living area.

No formal prepcon levels here, just an awareness of being in the raise/train/sustain phase.

No prepcon level for me either. I've almost finished the infrastructure building phase at my retreat and I'm turning my attention to reducing my skills deficit in a couple of areas, particularly medical skills. Looking seriously at a combat trauma course to be held later this year.

That's the organisation I'm looking at going with, at a paintball field in Milperra, Sydney. Also looking at the wilderness course but it's fairly expensive (not tax deductable for me).

Ummm.... From reading the "levels" and how they are applied, I'd have to say we are in the middle of level 1 this date.
That being summer as it is in the far north bush is when you get all that is needed done before the next winter. And you better be ready to hustle to get it done. A lot of level 5 time in winter. Time to read, relax, crafts and such. Winter storm times will be level 4-3-2, depending on snow moving to do livestock care and other necessities.
Pretty simple in a way.

I know I added a CAT and more field dressings after doing those courses.

My ifak is pretty well full of bandages and dressings(mainly those Israeli ones) and gauze for filling holes, with a Cat and an asherman thrown in for good measure.
Unfortunately at the moment I only have a basic knowledge of how to use all that stuff. Been far too busy earning, buying and building. Need to allocate more time and money to learning.

Well ... the plot thickens. I got a letter from one of my super funds telling me how they are re-profiling the risk settings on my investments.
And so I ask myself ... why now? I've NEVER had a letter like that before. Is this them making legal wriggle room for themselves in the event of a future class action against them for loosing everyones funds in a market melt-down?
I'm stepping up to PrepCon 3.

Tacmed ran a 5 day course in Melbourne- well run and lotsa cops/ ambos and a few industry type safety officers The wilderness first aid course was 4 days at mt Buller and run by rescuemed/ survive first aid—- it was great and based on a course started in the USA for medical/ nursing/ ambos who have to deal with outdoor issues(trauma bites burns hypo/ hyperthermia etc) It came with a textbook ( there is a wilderness medical society)and both courses were great Tax deductible and continuing education points There is a lot on YouTube on tccc and protocols are on line if you look up comtc ( committe for tactical trauma care)

It's been six months since this thread kicked off.
Time for a formal re-evaluation:
I've dialled back to prepcon 5. Although remaining at PC2 when it comes to bushfires.

My level hadn't changed. Booked into a TCCC course in Feb. Will probably do other courses throughout the year.
Once I've had some training I will assess my physical med preps and probably find them lacking, so I foresee a period of buying sh$t loads of first aid consumerables.
Anyone notice how a minor event in NZ overwhelmed their mecical facilities? 30 burns victims and they were at capacity. What if it was 3000 victims? I doubt Australia, per capita, would do any better. I expect hospitals to be unable to cope in even a small scale disaster, so would like to have my own substantial supply of consumerables.

They weren’t at capacity - they were well over capacity. That’s why the Australians were decanted back to Oz so quickly. It wasn’t for compassionate reasons. In fairness these were serious burns as opposed to just severe injuries - for severe injuries national saturation would likely be around 100-150 depending of type of injuries - and then the system would teeter! Per head of population Australia is very similar.

Bump. To be honest i’m nervous about this coronavirus. China are just so untrustworthy and i can’t rely on anything they say about this issue. The escalation is alarming.

Mate, here on the ground in one of the harder hit provinces (not Hubei), I'm wavering between 3 and 2. Been talking to Aussie expat mates coming back to the city after new year holidays. Quite a few have left their wives and kids with their in-laws out in the boonies --- a bad idea if the virus gets there, but safer if things gets nasty and a lot more food available if needed. We're doing ok for now, but still having trouble getting some members of the family to understand that things could get bad very quickly. Wife has asked if its possible for Aus govt to get us out if need be, but I honestly don't think the feckwits in charge in Aus have a clue whats going on. Are going to look into what overseas flights are available, although chances are a lot will be cancelled if things don't go well for containment measures next week.

Anyone else upped their preps because of the coronavirus?? Sort of. Got Another 2 weeks worth of canned food and stuff to drink plus more bottled water, so if they place my apartment building on lock down I can have food of my choice instead of government issued stuff (assuming there is any). I don't see large scale city shut down, the government is too spineless to even suggest that but an apartment block or two is possible I guess. Apart from that, nothing, not too worried. I am actually looking at plane tickets and Asian hotel prices for around July/Aug, prices are pretty cheap now. If it is not under controlled by then the world would be pretty screwed so no point to hold onto a few hundred bucks anyway.

Anyone else upped their preps because of the coronavirus?? Yes, extra vigilance & reading on the virus information, modified routines to minimise social contact, particular attention to minimising phyisical contact with individuals and shared surfaces, use of sanitiser. Maintaining fuel tanks at near full and all reserve storage is full and adding to stored food preps. We already have PPE but will continue to bolster stocks.
