Absolutely. Very few people in Australia have seen what a complete collapse looks like. My father fought for Germany in WW2, saw and lived real hardship. He never talked about it, unless it was to pass on a life lesson. Like the time he and 2 others executed a child in a french village, or how they used to kill American soldiers for their food. He had zero tolerance for us kids wasting food. He slaughtered my pet rabbit once, and when I refused to eat it they stuffed a piece of it in my mouth and held my nose closed, swallow or suffocate. Yep, starving people get real brutal, real quick, and if you aren't mentally and physically prepared to deal with that then you will be a victim of someone who is. That's intense. I'm sorry you experienced that. That's a truly harrowing thing to hear . We can love our parents or even just respect them while still acknowledging that they're only human and that some of the things they do are wrong. I don't presume to know your father or understand what he had to live through, but I feel that peace time affords us the luxury of time when it comes to teaching our children important lessons. That lesson is definitely one that could have been taught a better way. That must have been heartbreaking and somewhat scary to you as a child. Even as an adult, I'd feel slightly traumatized if someone slaughtered one of my beloved pets and forced me to eat it. That being said I do agree that hungry people (or people in fear of hunger) are one of the most unpredictable and dangerous beasts out there and we need to be perfectly well aware of the fact that there ARE people out there who are willing to do things that others aren't. I guess it all goes down to what you're willing to do to have a fully stomach or the medicine that you need. People are dangerous when they're seriously uncomfortable.

I saved this from aussurvivalist (may it Rest In Peace) 10 years ago - I thought I was a really good introduction to preparedness / survivalism. No credit from me, written by Agreyman - who may or may not be here under another name. A beginners guide to survivalism.doc (47 KB)

An old Romanian i know had some interesting stories to tell about ww2, nothing was wasted not even the skin from potatoes and pumpkins.
Well worth researching how they survived back then, especially the diet.

Bwahaha. If my memory serves me well, the only scenario Grayman didn't plan for was an SAS hit team, out for his blood for stealing an extremely rare opportunity to sit backseat for a joyride in an FA18. He may still be looking over his shoulder for a very pi$$ed off trooper.
