I could use more accommodation at the retreat, but theres no way the Mrs would go for something that rough. She wants the sort of two bedroom cabins with verandah you find at tourist parks. I like her friends, but I'm not going to drop $50k so a couple of extra ones can stay for the weekend.

The area we camp , hunt , etc is a very Sandy soil throughout the region with state forest bordering 3 sides , was thinking of burying a 30mm ammo container with a few water bottles , some spend brass and a few peanut / snack bars as an experiment and see how it survives for a year give or take before committing with any valuable type gear or real supplies . Sections of the state forest are slightly elevated so it should be safe from flooding and soft enough to dig deep to keep safe from bushfire ..hopefully

was thinking of burying a 30mm ammo container <<< >>> I did an experiment with a bigger size 50 caliber ammo can.. This suspended in a tree over winter as no digging with 2 meters snow, and 2 meters frost in the ground..
No water bottles or anything that would not survive a freeze.. All in all, it seemed to work well.. My next stage of the experiment is either an old up right freezer or a steel job site tool box attached to a skid so it can me moved with the tractor and pallet forks..
Either with extra secured by a couple ratchet straps to keep it more bear resistant.. More the key to bear resistant is nothing that will emit an odor to attract them..
I suspect "bush fire" is a significant issue for you like "winter" is for us in any plans...
Looking forward to posted results..

I was looking at the retaining wall the other day and one of the rocks was loose, a big rock though! Soon I might experiment with pulling it out and seeing if I can make a cache behind it. If I was building a wall from scratch that would be an easy exercise. It's pretty easy to scope around a property with a metal detector looking for things but I assume no one would bother with a rock wall. I remember once I was at a home in Brisbane that had a WWII bomb shelter in it's backyard. Not what you'd imagine, just a long narrow dugout in a steep embankment with an entry at either end. It was one of those old original homes but Brick, well built. The shelter was wood though, huge hardwood beams. I was impressed! Outside of the University of Queensland there weren't many dedicated shelters.
It's easy to get lax with caching stuff around the home, a lot of important stuff ends up above ground and a target waiting to be stolen.

Watch the drainage with the retaining wall. They can become 'dams' and ruin what you put there.

"I suspect "bush fire" is a significant issue for you like "winter" is for us in any plans..."
That's true, most of our farm preps are concerned with fire, fixed hose reels on buildings, diesel and petrol pumps, dams, reasonably fireproof fiberglass tanks, interconnected with isolating valves, and with enough fire hoses to reach several 100 meters around the buildings and up into the bush if needed.
Started clearing the areas around the houses with the brush cutter, ready to mow. The score so far is - cane toads 0, brush cutter 2.......
Broke my glasses frame yesterday, again, not a very robust frame, so the new ones were in town and a quick trip to pick them up. (well, 45 minutes each way is quick out here). Stocked up on salted cashews as "she who must be obeyed" and myself like to munch on some after tea when we are sitting on the lounge surfing the net.
Wondered what the beeping was in my left ear, changed the battery in the hearing aid and its not happened again. The hearing people gave me at least 24 battery's, enough for 12 months.

Depends where you are, out here, someone's dog will let us know that somethings wrong and we can take care of it, but in town....another reason to get out ASAP. 100 meters to the front gate from the houses, plus 4 dogs, one a dingo X who cant stand strangers, and you would be in deep doggie do do if you tried to enter without permission.
The worst thing about censorship is {{{{{]]]]]}}}}....
