Nice shack milspec! Stoked to see some other hams here on Ausprep. I recently put one of QSLcoms X50 dual banders up. We're renting and unfortunately the place is pretty low and in a body corp, but my PVC pipe antenna mast strapped to the balcony hasn't caused any complaints yet. I can reach a number of repeaters so that's the main thing, though I do enjoy talking simplex to some closer operators. I'm in VK4

Actually, greyhat has inadvertently raised a good topic. I like keeping a low profile and therefore like hiding my antennas- as they tend to stick out and attract attention. That is why I prefer handhelds and magnetic mounts. But I would like to explore and research how to hide good antennas. I recall the opening scenes from the old show “hogans hero’s” where they fictionally hid their Morse code antennae on a flag pole. That is what I’d like to research more as I don’t want to attract attention. I have previously laid copper wire through trees for receiving only, but transmitting is a different ballgame. Is anyone aware of any good resources on this topic?

The cool thing with cars is, 90% of people on the road think its just a UHF antenna. Unless you are running HF with a loaded base. I use to run a handheld which i put in the car and pulled into the antenna, away i went. Now there is a permanently mounted option in the car. Its concealed though, which makes things nice and neat. Only a 2m/70cm set up. The 4x4 will get the good stuff, but for a every day driver, it only needs to do basic stuff. Ill book in one day to be able to talk on the air.

For anyone looking for Amateur related info go to the WIA website and click on "Affiliated Radio Clubs" and check out the club sites. Sometimes there are a lot of free resources to help out with the learning process.
The Shepparton club (SADARC) has a resources page that might be useful, but I'm sure a lot of other club pages would have useful information as well if you're starting out or looking to upgrade.

Well foundation course is now completed and done. No concerns with passing. In fact I enjoyed the weekend course. The nerd and geek in me enjoyed going through the material - in which most of if I knew anyway. It really is simple and if you have a very basic understanding in electronics and how radios work then you would have no issues in doing it. It is worth it. I’ve requested a specific call sign too - so just waiting the believed 4-6 weeks for the paperwork to come through. I do plan to do the standard course (and upgrade) early next year. milspec - you mentioned in another thread that are also waiting on the paperwork. How long have you been waiting for?

Thank you

xd Yes - the course structure was basically as you say. That is, Saturday was about 8-9 hours with theory and practical training mixed in with interesting discussions and chats. Sunday morning was revision and then the theory exam and then a practical test as well. Sunday was finished by about 2pm. each test/assessment (theory and practical) was about 30 mins each. the whole course and testing is nothing to stress about. Very worthwhile.

Lol either way. I haven't even CONSIDERED getting a Ham licence because I'm all kinds of stupid when it comes to facts and figures. I think anyone that can pass that test is basically a genius, even HF theory destroys my brain! Luckily, the foundation exam has 1 or 2 questions on HF..

Just waiting to sit my COVID-Safe Regs exam and I'm all set. Advanced theory and practice passed 100%.
EDIT: Passed Regs too.
