Well, day in day out i deal with solar and the direct products involved with solar. This is all 12V systems though (car, caravan, camper mounted etc) The first thing you will need to do is work out what you want to run from the solar. What you need will be based on this. In a perfect world....I would like to have a system to run my small freezer (totally off grid if possible) but I realise that may be a big ask cos the "google god" says that you can't do it due to the high demand that freezers pull from the solar set-up! I don't want to run a genny (and possibly blow myself up making moonshine....uummm I mean fuel!) due to the noise they create, so solar would be my preference. It would be handy to have a solar set-up to recharge/run small devices (ie laptop, a single light, battery charger etc). What can you actually run with a solar 12V set-up? Kenna I'm convinced that you can run a freezer at fridge temperatures as per this by plugging it into a temperature controller, something like this and putting the sensor inside the 'freezer-now-fridge' as according to the site it draws very little power at approximately 0.1 kWh. What this translates into is a 120W panel with some batteries, regulator, inverter [sine wave needed for fridges] being able to give the freezer-now-fridge enough power to keep it cool. The main reason stated is that a freezer has far better insulation than a fridge and because it is a chest freezer, the cool air stays within the container [cool air sinks]. I've not built my system but have it planned out, just waiting on funds to catch up

I can do without a fridge (I think) by using an esky as a makeshift fridge but I would like to be able to run a small chest freezer if at all possible (without going broke setting it up). Waeco portable fridge/freezers cost lots of $$$$ (runs on 12V I believe, but please don't smack me if I'm wrong) but I'm starting to think that would be the best option with the addition of annoying Wayne to sell me the required portable solar panels to keep it running...

For portable/camping stuff no doubt Wayne's your man, he may have a solution for you. Freezers are better than standard fridges but the start up cost to run a standard one is still significant when it comes to solar as getting enough energy to run these appliances will cost. I added your question to the discussion HERE because I have a lot more info there.
