All the blokes here are experts on women in leadership positions as well I see...
There is one thing and only one thing I can say with certainty on the NZ PM, irrespective of her political leaning it would of been hell for her to get to the top. With a young family I'm surprised she tolerated it for as long as she did.

I'm not racially or gender prejudiced, They are all corrupt, male/female/other/black/blue/white/old/young makes no difference.
All power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely. George Orwell

She banned smoking because of the damage it does to your health. I suppose alcohol, contact sports, horse riding, motorcycle riding, donuts, fast food, soft drinks are next. Maybe not donuts, the cops would never allow that. Banning soft drinks and fast food would be a good thing for the population (especially for kids) - but that's never gonna happen. Too much money involved.

After spending a LOT of time dealing with people who're in the inner circles of industry I can tell you one thing that I know for fact rather than just media reporting. Women ARE trying to join parties. More often than not they're being systematically blocked by not only the 'boys club' that exists in middle to upper echelons but by the culture itself. "If you let us take you off the ticket this year, we'll put you up for this speccy position next year" and then "Oh sorry, that role isn't available anymore" is just as blocking as "No girls allowed". It's just not reported on. And until it's happened to you (or someone that you know) it's unlikely that you'd ever hear about it. Obviously that can happen to anyone. Man or woman. But I do know that the proportion of women that it happens to is far larger than fair-minded people would like to think. Anyway, back on topic haha. I reckon any pollie whether male or female would be nuts to knock back the chance to draw a shiny pension without having to do any work for it. If you were a NORMAL person you'd probably do otherwise. For sanity if nothing else. But yeah... I can't see anyone kicking a stink about it if they didn't have anything left in the tank to give. That 'club' behaviour isn't confined to gender. It happens in many work places and sports teams and often excludes boys/men for a variety of reasons. Sometimes their father didn't hang with the 'club' or they didn't go to the right school or because one of 'the club' took a dislike to them for no real reason.

I have observed it over many years in both the workplace and socially including kids sport. At netball where groups of mums are cliquey and the coach excludes girls because the clique dislike their mothers. At cricket where the coach only selects the sons of his friends despite some boys being 10x better. (Note: my kids weren't the ones being excluded) In the workplace where some people get the job because they are friends with the boss even though they lack the skills/experience, sometimes others are fast tracked despite other better qualified candidates. Often these appointments occur with little advertising or fanfare so as to go under the radar. One person was even promoted 3 levels without the position being advertised which is unheard of in the sector.

But the system is great when it works in your favour. I had a quick rise through the ranks when I joined the public service, because the regional manager was the same heritage and he took me under his wing.
Didn't work out so well in my current career, Where you had to sleep with the female boss to get anywhere. Wrong colour hair for me.

Engineering tends to be a very Darwinian field in my experience...competency gets you to rise pretty fast, until they want you to manage people. Management positions tend to require a different skill-set, a skill-set that most engineers don't prioritise. Gen X and younger tend to value social and networking skills a bit more so that generations engineering managers (now coming online with Boomer retirements) are generally a bit more rounded. Just my observations.

Being a good Engineer is one thing, recognizing issues with people is another.
Had a very good job, the company invested in some equipment to find faults in electrical panels before they were problems (FLIR). Unbeknown to me, my supervisor was in deep debt and setting up faults to get call-outs. I stopped all that with my preventive maintenance program and got shown the door 'cause of it. No regrets though, no grudges, we all get what we deserve in the end.
We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.

No regrets though, no grudges, we all get what we deserve in the end. That's another thing that engineers do that we shouldn't...we let things slide. I was guilty of it too but I would go kicking and screaming these days. I got injured at a workplace and I just left the place. I should of rolled that company for hundreds of thousands and I would today...ironic because I don't need the money now. Sometimes you need to do stuff on principle so others learn a lesson or don't get hurt like you did.
The culture was so bad there I just wanted out and never look back. Now I realise that was part of the problem - no one cared (Australian manufacturing in a nutshell). Money makes people care.

I was offered a few months salary to p.ss off, which I accepted as I'm a pretty chilled sort of guy and didn't want a show.
Anyway, the next job wasn't as much money, but closer to home and I was a valued part of the team keeping the wheels on the machinery. There were also perks, like as much timber as I wanted, free firewood, sawdust etc. Once the boss realized I knew what I was doing, he accepted my recommendations to spend money on upgrades. Less stress, no middle management d.ck heads to deal with, and respected for my skills. Stayed there until one of the founders died from old age and the other brother wanted out and it was sold.
Ive seen the evidence for, I want to see other evidence.
