Such things are all in the context and voice inflection, probably impossible to learn without spending time here. Like anyone going to a new country it's best to keep the language safe until you know how to use it.
My wife is a Pom (English), she's been out here about 34 years, about two years ago someone walked past our truck and she said "G'day mate", I nearly shat myself, never heard her use (m)any Aussie colloquialisms before. I guess she finally felt comfortable with the expression.

Geez, how long have you got Major projects include Finish container house Build steel and wood work workshop Get smithy running Finish Ardwidget (electronic gadget) design and get PCBs made. LiFePo4 monitor (another electronic gadget for lithium battery charging) Design and build camper on 4x4 Get 6x6 motorhome back into roadworthy shape and ready as a BOV Design and install front gate alarm (it's 400m away so will need RF link) Build walking tracks (with foot bridges and shelters) around land. Get back into nature photography Mark out the Rob Gray memorial track (16k along the creek into town), hopefully not really a "memorial" track for some time. Build a bucking stand for firewood cutting. Learn how to grind wheat and make bread from resulting flour. ... Some of which have a 100 sub projects Actually I'm interested in mead production, I do normal home brew now but mead interests me.

It varies a lot and NSW is a big state with everything from alpine to desert and sub tropical. But in general you won't have ANYWHERE near the cold you do in most of the US. That said here's a pic of my camp on a walk in mid summer Mind you this is in the mountains, just a mile or so from Australia's highest point.

Try camping in the bush in Kenya in a 2-man bushwalkers tent, elephants all around on the first night, I nearly shat myself. Other times had lions sniffing around the camp, thank God I didn't need a pee. You want to try life somewhere below the top of the food chain, spend some time in Africa

Yeah work really sucks, glad I tossed it in years ago Actually I've pretty much always been paid monthly and had jobs where they really didn't care what hours you worked as long as the job got done, I was very lucky I think.

We ran out of gas at dinner time on a Friday night a few weeks ago, nowhere to get a refill until Monday around here so we fired up the wood stove and used that for the weekend.
100% no drama.

... last week I stopped buying chocolate as I was eating too much. Bugger me, the missus went shopping today and I just realised she bought 6 packs of dark chocolate, what can I say, I don't want to offend her so I'll have to go halves in it eh? I'll give up next week.

I worked as an electronics engineer for many years, and in fact still do occasionally on a contract basis, I have no idea what courses are available (I was self taught) but may be able to help anyone with specific problems. Note I said "electronics" not "electrical", there is a difference and a lot of electrical stuff is black magic to me, that said I've done all the wiring for several solar projects so have a fair idea about that, and a lot of the principles are the same. I was recently asked by a neighbour to design and implement his new solar system, I originally said yes but then looked into the new rules and regs...forget it, too much crap and (presumably) too much potential liability. I think (but don't quote me) that for low-voltage work you don't need a ticket, but you still have to follow the rules relating to the work. AFAIK you can actually wire up 240 as well but it has to be ticked off by a sparkie. That's one way to save money though as you do most of the work. It used to be the case that you could do 240 wiring if it was at the end of an extension lead plugged into a GPO (power point), if that's still the case you could in theory just get a sparkie to wire up a power board then do everything else off a few extension leads

I love both coffee and chocolate, but no great loss if I can't get either. In fact last week I stopped buying chocolate as I was eating too much.

Airflow and wet clothes. No breeze, manual fans I guess.
But I gotta ask, why would you not have power and therefore fans.

Sounds like standard slow cooker practice, we've been using a "Dream Pot" (goggle it) for years, works for chicken and all sorts. Just put stuff into the pot, boil the surrounding water for a few minutes then put it aside for a few hours, works every time

They will follow a policy of appeasement. This would be an interesting conundrum I think for those of us who don't live in Sydney. Personally if all Sydney was to sink under the ocean I doubt I would care much (ok don't take me literally ), and living in central QLD the loss of just part of it in itself would barely ruffle a feather. But of course it wouldn't stop there, so what to do? Form/join a local militia and head off to Penrith in our utes? Wait until Islam is knocking on the door of Rockhampton and then have a go? Keep a low profile up here in the bush and hope for the best? I wouldn't mind putting money on there already being 'no go' zones in the cities, not officially but essentially. But even if they become quasi official what could any of us do about them? Buggered if I know. I guess such contained 'ghettos' are no real threat and the Muslim population is IFAIK only 2% in Oz so they will not get anyone into parliament, so is this a real threat in the future, once again I dunno. On the other hand any such ghetto is a breading ground for little Jihadies who will grow up just gagging for the chance to blow themselves up on the Manly ferry. Personally I feel that any declaration of a mini caliphate should be met with wholesale deportation of said caliphate's members to a very hot and dry shithole of their choice. But nobody would have the balls to do that.

Ooo how can I unsee that Mind you that's what happens to most Landrovers, now if that had been a Cruiser I'd have to cut your head off for blasphemy. If war is brought to our streets, and the government does not effectively and openly oppose the enemy. What will you do? Something I've thought a lot about of late. I have not reached a conclusion though, and may not until the time comes. My generation (and I think all those after me) has never had to face a real threat at a national level, the best we can hope for is that, if necessary, we step up to the plate as those before us have done.

They felt no alliegences to a country that has sheltered them for decades - only hatred. Now there's something that hasn't changed in some circles. This is becoming very topical of late.

Matilda, thanks for that info, even knowing my Dad's story I have to say that as I read your excerpts I could feel my face getting red and my blood pressure rising in a way I've not felt for a long time. I never use the C word and seldom the F word but I can think of no other description for those bastards. How they weren't shot in the heat of the moment I have no idea. As I said in my post I have heard this first-hand story from my Dad, so I have no doubt that all the rest is true. As for what's happening in the world right now...I have to go for a walk before I really get mad...back later after I've had a talk to my wallabies and possums and cooled off a tad, "my" wildlife hangs around the house and I find that talking to them has a real calming effect. Who knows, maybe one day they'll talk back.

what the unions/commo's did to our Fighting Finest in WW2, When my dad's ship came back from the middle east during WW2 (Tobruk etc) the bastard dock workers would not allow supplies to be loaded, bad move on a mob of armed guys that had just spent years killing people Need I state that they got their supplies? I saw that program, posted about it on my FB page. When you start getting this sort of thing on the ABC current affairs progs you would think maybe people are taking notice...but maybe not.
