How cool are they? We must think alike as this is my main hen house, non-moveable of course. And this one is attached to my compost bay where the birds do the turning of the compost for me.
And thanks again for those rococo seeds

Very cool looking unit fractus. How many birds do keep in it?

Okay guys, I have exhausted most avenues so need to put the word out .... does anyone know a good reliable source of commercial meat chickens (fertile egg or day olds) in Victoria?
Cheers,
Veg.

I ran out of ply for the nest box lids but thought I'd post a pic anyway. This is a prototype but is currently in use. Next model is in the head until funds allow another build. It is moved by using a sack truck to 'pull' it into posi. The shade cloth now also has a tarp over it for all weather protection. The plan is to have multiple of these if I can find meat birds to chuck in them (see post in Homesteading). Ciao from the Veg (hey, I also eat meat ya know!!!)

OMG!
I agree totally with Frosty - grow as much for yourself as you can, because that's the only way to be truly sure. How crap has the would become?

Agree peter1942, as sometimes that's the best option.

Mr Pete, I have the 921 model and I have no idea if it's the most efficient, just selected this model as it seemed to be the most popular with the canning fraternity. I do believe that there are a lot more knowledgeable persons on this forum than I am on this subject, as I'm a total newb on all things pressure canning.

Couldn't agree more about the handling issues as almost all our jars came from clearing sales (and most were not too pretty either before a thorough cleansing ritual). Maybe I should have waited before surrendering my collection of Fowlers jars... although I have a feeling they might actually come back to us (young miss who I gave them too will probably find the whole preserving gig a bit too hard).

Now ya tell me .... I just got rid of my collection of Fowlers jars Seriously though, we were finding that even some of the Fowlers jars were starting to fail at their bottoms so I guess nothing lasts for ever, eh?

I couldn't agree with you more peter1942, and that's why the wife and I are ramping up our food production areas, watering storage facilities, back-up pumping system for the bore and most importantly educating ourselves to be able to supply adequate calories for ourselves and our stock even in the most trying of times. We often look back to simpler times as the knowledge of those before us can oft prove to be more than just bucolic rhetoric; I'd go so far as to say that perhaps they knew a thing or two even without hard science to back their claims. There are innumerable tomes out there written by farmers past who were not only adept at their farm skills but also deft of pen.
I can recommend a modern publication that ticks all the boxes: The Resilient Gardener by Carol Deppe.
