Excellent article! Something to add to the list of things to try, I reckon this would be a good project for a cold day by the fire.

There are lots of medical possibilities that could create "zombies" other than the traditional movie based "Braaaaaiiiiinnsssss" undead type. There is a type of fungus called Ophiocordyceps unilateralis that grows in body of the ant and produce chemicals that effect the brain of ant (often called a zombie ant) causing it to climb a tree and grasp onto a leaf where it then dies and the fungus can grow and release spores. While this mind altering behaviour seems to be limited to ants at this stage it is not unfathomable to think this could evolve to effect humans in a similar way. There are also known viruses that can alter a persons mood causing them to become manic, hostile and violent. An obvious example of that is Rabies which is commonly associated with dogs, in humans it ultimately causes death if not treated, but not before going through various stages including violence and mania. There are lots of other viruses that have the ability to effect the central nervous system such as encephalitis, polio, mumps, measles and even the flu etc. Again, through natural mutation these could cause a type of violent zombie like behaviour. Then there is always the possibility of a man made zombie like illness. With the advances in microbiology, pathology and genetic engineering it could be possible in the future to create a hybrid virus or bacteria that could cause a state of rage eg 28 Days Later or brain death. If an attacker wanted to eradicate the population of a country it wouldn't be much for a pathogen to be added to the water supply, or if airborne exploded over a city population, it would quickly spread and let the country wipe itself out. This may all seem like science fiction, but it is possible, if not now potentially in the future!

Nah, no talk of leaving earlier, mainly because this actually come from behind us AND this, believe it or not was deliberately lit (11yo & 15yo boys, both caught) Bloody hell! I tell you what if that was my lad he wouldn't know what hit him, then again I do spend time with him explaining fire safety and consequences from the lack of it, so fingers crossed it shouldn't come to that!

Thanks for sharing mate, I always wondered how quick these things were. Thats pretty dicey that it got so close, I assume the roads were pretty bad with people all trying to get away?
What made you stick around for as long as you did? Was there any discussion of closing up and leaving sooner?

I believe that you're suppose to take one pill a day, but I'm not entirely sure how long for! If you do find out anything Jacko let me know www.bt.cdc.gov/radiation/ki.asp has a lot of good info, but basically you should only take Iodine tablets once every 24 hours for 3-5 days after exposure. As these tablets only protect your thyroid from radiation damage, if the radiation levels are still high after 3-5 days you have bigger problems than thyroid damage. Also check out this eBay item - IOSAT-Potassium-Iodide-Radiation-Blocking-Tablets-LQQK - it has a Best Offer option, so you could potentially get it for $15-$17 (posted).

Good call, often folks can get caught up on the big SHTF stuff without thinking about the smaller things - I know I do.
Would you mind sharing what it was like for you, I for one have never had any close calls etc, it might make it a bit more real to understand what it was like now you are on the safe side of the whole thing.

I cant thank you all enough for the sacrifices our military does for us all. I cant imagine what it would be like, but I have nothing but the highest respect for those that are willing to sacrifice everything for others in this regard. If it wasn't for men and women like you guys and those that have given their lives for us over the years we simply would not have a life worth living. My words are nothing in the scheme of things, but I am truly grateful from the bottom of my heart for both me and my family. Thank you!

I've not got any military experience so a query on a tactical perspective for you blokes that are the experts in this stuff - would a railed fence like this be better from a defence perspective than a solid fence? I mean it would slow down an attacker, but not give them anywhere for cover?

Nice one mate, thanks for making the vid! Is the first bit you released at the bottom just purging the system?
Ive got a couple of the portable lifestraws and have been thinking about the Family version, I reckon your vid has convinced me.

What sort of length was that for Tac? Looks nice and solid, and room for the razor wire on top too!
