In todays sad times everybody is a potential target for a personal attack or being robbed.
For myself - I now carry and use a cane/walking stick which was made by my neighbour - it is a thin local timber but can instantly be raised an fits snugly along the forearm as a blocking instrument to fend of blows. All this from a simple change in grip that takes under a second.
The other advantage is the nice little knob on the very outer edge where your hand grip exists. If hit with this it would result in a very bad day for the recipient of the blow - broken jaw, broken check bone even a skull fracture - at any rate it provides distance.
People do not feel threatened from this so I can freely walk any where with it.

I like this idea of yours, I also suggest everyone learn a martial art, it's a good life prep and you can even carry it when traveling overseas.

Anyone used or seen one of these? www.extac.com.au/The_Unbreakable_Umbrella_p/unubbk01.htm
Agree dannyboyds, martial arts are a good skill to have. Doesn't have to be fancy or one dedicated to self defence like Krav Maga, anything is better nothing. Something like boxing/kickboxing are great for simplicity, timing and judging distances.

I did Karate Budokan for a wile years ago but got sick of all the BS and posturing. For that reason Krav Maga looks good to me but the nearest school is in Hervey Bay AFAIK. Too far to go. Re the walking stick, is it legal to carry one for self defence, as unless you need it to walk there is no other reason I can think of to have it according to the cops. Same with the umbrella unless it's raining or you can convince them you are very prone to sunburn I don't know, just wundr'n. In a similar vein in WA you can (or at least could) buy pepper spray legally, it was however illegal to use it but I was told that the police can exercise discretionary powers according to the circumstances. For example is a little old lady uses it on me that would probably be ok, but if I use it on a little old lady that's certainly not ok. Similarly if it was found in the little old lady's purse no probs, but I would have a hard time explaining why I needed it in my MOLLE'd cammo backpack while walking through the Westfield plaza.

Walking stick is also for fashion and pepper spray is also for flavour. Seems logical to me.

In Vic, as far as I know, it is illegal to carry anything purely for the purpose self-defence and anything being carried needs to be justifiable. I could be wrong though....

So - don't you have a 'trick' knee???
It is highly unlikely you will be challenged for it if you are using it while walking - I've never heard of it yet. Further I have never been challenged by anyone yet about carrying one - airlines insist it goes through x-ray though, even though they are insistent on it going through the scanner they then offer to assist me through the human metal detector - I just say 'nah - I'm good for short distances most of the time'. - that's the only issue I've had to date.
And yeah - I'd think it weird and wonder why someone looking healthy would be just carrying a 'brollie' in fine weather - I would become suss!!!

(Others will likely disagree with me on this) - but I started this thread for a specific reason - to get others to consider their best approach to P.P. And start to think outside the 'Norm'. My previous employer was intent on teaching staff to put distance between the staffer and any aggressor. (eg; a sharp lung forward with all your body wait behind a double handed shove to the centre mass (chest area) may gain you enough time to make a getaway and call for backup.)
There are heaps of manuals on this that explain things very well on line. So are extremely up to date with current methods - well they were for a couple of years ago. However in a post SHTF situation it is IMHO that people SHOULD do what ever they can to avoid any hostile contact.
- Remembering that modern medical assistane is no longer available like it is today.
A simple injury that is easily treatable today can easily become a serious life threating situation tomorrow post SHTF - long term.

this is why I recommend people learn a martial art, I'm currently slaving away at a mixed martial art Karate variant.

Its a good thread Sentinal. Every day I carry a metal pen, its small but solid. I also used to do a form of karate and BJJ, but more recently boxing.
What are you currently training in dannyboyds, if you don't mind me asking?
