Call me a prepper, call me crazy, call me a doomsayer but when SHTF, don't come running to my door... Our local group is planning to change the name to Philippine Disaster Preparedness Network but there are already too many Disaster Preparedness-named groups. We might just stick to DPP (DoomsDay Preppers Philippines). Either way, it means the same thing, if you are prepared for the worst, then you are prepared for anything. Like the group in the US called the Zombie Squad, they are actually very active with their local government despite the label. And initially, people thought they were a bunch of loonies for calling themselves that.

It's all in the name really - I know of one ' ?? Disaster Area Management Group' south of me, that hit up the local council and were supplied with a genie (amongst other things) - so being involved with a public group 'can' have it's advantages.

Wait... "It's not all about Doomsday"? It's not? It's not: "Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling! Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes... The dead rising from the grave! Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria!"* OMG, Am in the wrong place... Just kidding... But seriously, labels are like Marketing, even if you have the best idea in the world but the label sucks, it ain't gonna sell. That's maybe why NatGeo's DDP was quick to catch on followed by all those other series. Unfortunately, because of that, legitimate preppers are looked at in a funny way. Although I never really called myself a Doomsday Prepper but simply a prepper, because I was prepping for Natural Disasters although the Doomsday word reflected the philosophy that if you are prepared for a MAJOR event, then you are practically prepared for most if not all events. Before, (here in the Philippines) when you said you were into Disaster Preparedness, they would say that you are paranoid because the end of the world is far and there is no major catastrophic event that can affect people on a large scale. Now, we see Disaster Preparedness infommercials, courses, seminars, etc. popping up all over. * Ghostbusters

Remember how much 'necessary' software was being pushed in marketing to prevent the Y2K issue that was looming over us all.

Y2K was a real issue, just not quite like it was portrayed. Certainly not a doomsday event.

Made quite a bit of moolah at the time. although most repairs were a simple change from a 2-digit year format to a 4-digit year format.

Y2K was a real issue, just not quite like it was portrayed. Certainly not a doomsday event. In the Finance industry, it would have made quite an impact but these usually affected only the older systems. As early as 1990, there were products in the market that could already accommodate the shift in century

I wrote a library management program (in Paradox) for a university in the early 80s. 2-digit date format, never even thought of the issue and anyway who's going to be using my program in 20 years? Turns out they still were using it I did the original job too cheap so to recoup my loses I hit them up for a good figure to get square overall. A quick fix and everyone was happy.

good stuff Rob! the key word to this is LEGACY... lol..no one expected them $10m mainframes to be still in use after 20 years. People _should_ have obsoleted them, especially if you go by moore's law. However, thats not always the case, so yeah... that was a good time to be in. We should form an Asia Preparedness network, with the forum based on AUSPREP. We could each have a website/youtube channel/blog for each of the Asian countries but have the forum based here. minimally it will drive some more users here, maybe some donations and all. The collaboration possibilities are endless

The few people that know im a "prepared individual" say nothing about it. Theres times now and then someone will make a joke about it, but then its brushed off and the conversation is changed. As most you know i also hate the word and the label "prepper" hence why it wasnt used in the forum when i created it. But to be honest, i dont care what anyone calls or labels me So, we can call you whatever we want then? ? But, the term prepper does bring to mind fruitcake Yanks armed to the teeth. That's why I like the term Wayne uses - Preparedness. Homesteader: Broadly defined, homesteading is a lifestyle of self-sufficiency. It is characterized by subsistence agriculture, home preservation of foodstuffs, and it may or may not also involve the small scale production of textiles, clothing, and craftwork for household use or sale. Pursued in different ways around the world — and in different historical eras — homesteading is generally differentiated from rural village or commune living by isolation (either socially or physically) of the homestead (Wikipedia). Don't think we fall into this defenition. Ok so I looked up the Latin word for prepared, which is Paratus. We could call ourselves Paratusians!! haha
