Hi Members, from the thread: ausprep.com/thread/206/bug-out-plan most would have known that i plan to hit the road should SHTF in our life time. I like to think of myself as being organized to the point OCD comes to mind. And thats what i was with my camper. Everything was clean, packed and had a place. Everything was accounted for and ready to go. Life took a turn and as some know there was a family illness. I needed to help however i could but in this day and age, money is the key. Money was needed, i had a little but not enough...So i sold my camper. I wont say it saved a life BUT it helped ease the financial burden of my loved one whilst they were layed up. Fast forward to today.. I still plan on bugging out, however with no camper its going to be hard(er) i have lots of plans, lots of ideas. Some may work, some may not. This thread is going to be my "dear diary"on the things i do to set my family up to bug out. Last night i bought 4 small roller tubs with lids, this is where it will start. I have my F.A.K which i have now decided i need to expand on. So i purchased a bigger box for it. This will be this weekends task. #1 will contain personal hygiene items. #2 will contain cooking and food preps. #3 ..... #4 ...... This will be my weekends work.

I like the extinguisher setup, Very cool. Is that three first aid kits in that top photo?.I used to carry the kitchen sink as far as first aid kits go. Then i took a good look at it and realised it was there for other peoples injuries. These days for me its more about SELF AID than first aid.All you'll find in my car kit now is a (Boo Hoo kit) 1 x triangular bandage not for slings but as a pad to stop bleeding and a crepe bandage to hold it in place.A few assorted bandaids, povidine swabs, splinter probe and gloves. Plus an assortment of OTC meds for me. Personally I'd replace the axe for a good pruning saw, exchange the matches for lighters. Replace the cutlery with a spork or a small pack of disposable plastic forks and knives from coles and a smaller torch.

On the plus side for matches, you can "Hot Box" them when a fire just wont damn well start. I also like that shovel I have one just like it and they are sturdy as hell.

In an emergency, and if your stay was only one night you could sacrifice a whole box of matches to get a stubborn fire going. quarter open the box with the match ends to be lit exposed, turn it upside down, light from underneath carefully, when they catch it will go off like a mini flare for a few seconds.
Results vary, sometimes siting the box up on it's side longways so the striker is facing to the ground works too, or you can remove all the matches from the box and use them all as mini kindling and build your tinder around it.
Ultimately your sacrificing something very important so you better be damned sure you wont need it later.

taping together about 8 matches is usually enough to get a good fire. Light it from on side and as it moves from head to head, the flare would be enough to start the tinder or counter the wind.

In an emergency you could always carry one of these emergency heaters i made up a while back. All it is is an old Milo tin with a dunny roll in it. Just take the cardboard core out and remove a few outer sheets so you can squeeze it in. Then dump a bottle of Isopropyl alcohol into the tin and let the roll soak up the liquid. Using alcohol there is no black smoke to cause you any problems with soot. The continuous burn time for this can was 2 hours 17 minutes. If all you need to do is to cook a meal or warm your hands up on a cold night Is after use put the lid back on tight and smother the flame to re-use next time.

What is the benefit of using IPA over IMS 95% denatured? (Metho) I only ask because of the difference in cost.

Here is a thought... I have a tacoma which I'm fairly certain is the same as a hilux. Have you thought of a bed mounted tent? I have used one and they are great! You can easily shift gear storage out of the bed by using underbody boxes. This way you won't have to sacrifice the utility of your pickup. Attachments:
