I just bought a couple of sexy little 2nd hand mutlitools (one Gerber, one leather man) and wanted to ask a few questions:
How regularly should I sharpen the blades?
The Leatherman has some tiny superficial rust spots. What would you recommend to clean it up?
One of the items is a bit stiff and difficult to open on the Gerber. Would WD40 be the best thing to loosen it up?

green pot cleaning pads (I can't spell the word) use lightly and with a little oil it will look like a million bucks sharp, like any knife, I have one floating around that hasn't lost its sharpness and never been sharpened

are these the ones you and Nate had been talking about? i'm glad you finally took the plunge and got yourself some good multitools, I own a leatherman and I love it, you wont regret the buy. As for sharpening, it depends, if you oil it lightly and regularly it will hold it's edge longer, don't cut cardboard with it either

I've got, uhh... a couple leathermans.
Sharpen when they're dull.
For the stiffness, try a little inox or 556 spray (I personally don't like WD40 as it dries into a gluey gum)
For maintenance and clearing up that rust, I like to just use a little inox and if a normal cloth doesn't work then a pot scourer or some steel wool will be fine. For getting into the little gaps that every multitool has, I prefer to use a Qtip rather than pull it apart if I can help it. If you've dropped it in the mud or there is rust in there, then you gotta pull it apart, but getting the tension on the screws tight enough that they won't undo and loose enough that you can still get the tools to move can sometimes be a pain. Loctite will help with that.

Thanks heaps Ammo9, I think the rust is just superficial at this stage so hopefully I won't have to pull it apart.

are these the ones you and Nate had been talking about? Oops sorry, forgot to reply! It's a skeletool like what we were talking about, but I scored it for $45 off gumtree. Winning!
