Saw this yesterday and thought I would post it up if anyone is interested:
www.news.com.au/lifestyle/real-life/offgrid-living-in-australia-victoria-waghorn-reveals-how-shes-living-a-simpler-life/story-fnixwvgh-1227020555298
"THEY live off the grid, barter and trade and shun money where possible. It may sound like the Simple Life, but to Victoria Waghorn and her fellow community members it is much more than that.
The group who live off the land in a community in the NSW Southern Highlands grow their own vegetables, have chickens, and even catch their own water.
They also produce their own solar power which means they rely on the sun for all their electricity.
Along with her fellow commune members, the group aims to become completely self sustainable, and in an ideal world, would love to never need money again.
But Victoria knows that’s an idealistic view and that money is a necessary evil.
“I think it’s admirable but unfortunately money is a necessity, I’d just like to try and live without it as much as possible” she told news.com.au
“I just don’t want to be defined by an annual salary.”
Not only does money buy essentials the group can’t produce, such as medicine, but it also helps pay for the rain water tanks and systems the commune will need to eventually become fully self-sustainable.
Instead she said the group looked at wealth in terms of what they contributed rather than in monetary terms and they simply wanted to move away from society’s obsession with cash."

Love this! I grew up somewhere similar - but not to the self sustainable extent that these guys have taken it.

I think this is great and impressive but if I'm honest with myself, I love being a consumer. I would attempt to live like this, if I had an income stream from something that didn't require much of my time.

I wonder how they handle the legalities, do people buy a plot, rent an area, etc. And what does the local counsel think of it. Yes I too would like to live in a commune like that in many ways, but I realise that I like things done in my own way and in my own time and that may not in the same way and time as the group. I see they have people stay in the bus as a form of income, I've been tempted to do that with my motorhome. Not so good for OPSEC though

I was thinking the same thing graynomad, regarding how the manage it. Either way, good on them for having a crack at it, I hope it works out. Personally, wouldn't be for me as, I would prefer somewhere with just my family and I. But, I can appreciate the appeal of that lifestyle.

Good vid, you don't have to work till you're 60 (or is it 70 these days), you can probably have the simple cheap life now.

Enjoyed the video, Reality is not everyone will give up what they have been accustom to. These are the ones that will not survive and if they do they will be in dire straights. Only those who have the will to survive can appreciate living a simple life. Off the grid living has the connotation of not needing money and total self sufficiency. But inreality you need to buy land, pay rates and taxes and buy seed, animals and other tools and gear to set up! We should look at off grid living as a precursor to the final end of civilization as we know it! where there will be no money or things to buy. The idea of community living allow us to have an extended family to be able to live off the land and have the skills to survive! Not everyone has the ability to afford to leave work to live off grid. But I know that my door will be open to have some close friends move to help us when SHTF!!! Not everyone gets on all the time, so we need to have space or our own area to retreat too, but still work together for the common good of survival! I believe everyone can have the opportunity to change there lifestyles and increase there ability to live a simple life if they truly put in the hard yards!!!! Living simple, not buying to keep up with the Jones!!! Save money, No takeaways, just fresh food, No expensive holidays, when simple camping with the family will do! Each partner need to look at their values and not "Oh I don't like that, I want..." Selfishness will destroy you and a relationship! Marriage is a partnership of living and Loving and survival. Both partners need to be on the same page for this to happen. All this life provides is Debt, carnal pleasures and work to pay for it with no surety that you will have anything when you retire!!! What if: the Government can't pay a pension or the market crashes so bad you loose your super!!! What if,What if... Your life is in your hands NOW!!! What are you going to change or what decisions will you make now to make sure you will survive? I'll shut up now...
