Hi, water is one of the most important keys to survival. Many thousands of people die every day due to the lack of potable water. As preppers we strive to have a good stash of water put back but it will never be enough. Unfortunately water filters are extremely expensive but they can give us a lot of water in a small package. I have researched and found a way to have a high quality filter for a very low cost. The heart of any filter is the element itself. Let's take the famous British Berkefeld for example: in America they cost upwards of 300 dollars. Yet the replacement filters run as little as 40 dollars a pair... All the system consists of is 2 stainless steel cans housing a filter element and a spigot. I have made my own with two 19L food grade buckets (5 gallon) a water spigot and the filter candle at a total cost of 35 USD. The information on the performance of this setup is widely available through youtube. Just thought I would share. This is a great prep for those on a budget!

Note the recycling symbol. This denotes a food grade material. Attachments:

awesome work mate, that really is ingenious. can you explain the spigot to me a bit more though, I'm afraid I'm not a very good with tap fittings etc, is it like a spigot bush on a motor?

Sure thing Daniel. A spigot is simply a valve to let the filtered water out of the bottom bucket. The one I bought was 2 USD and consists of the valve, 2 O - rings and a nut. You drill the appropriate sized hole and screw it in. A close up of the spigot: Attachments:

haha silly me, I was thinking tap or valve, etc, etc. Thank you mate, this would be so good to take camping, just fill up from the river and the whole family can come and go as they please grabbing fresh water.

I have access to these buckets at work, if time/budget permits I may make one, or at least grab a few buckets for when that sunny day comes.

Great write up, thanks for the info! It's crazy how cheaply you can make some things if you just have the knowledge.
