best part is, if you go to your local tyre shop, they will give the old ones to you for free if you explain what your doing. They charge the customer a disposal fee, then you take them for free, they get a double win.

I've heard you need to be careful what ones you get though, some leech a dangerous mineral into the soil and plants. Idk how common they are but it's worth looking further into.

The heavy metal is bonded with the rubber and would take 50years or more to leach out. Unless you heat them. They make children's rubber safety floors at parks and McDonald out off old tyers!

EDIT: I just called them, they are happy for me to take as many as I want. WINNING!

my grandfather approached the government with a project to help stop the Erosion in Australia. His plan, putting old tyres in the ground, and fill with water. After it did many different trial runs he worked out the best system to ensure they will have enough water to kick start a new environment. The governments response to him was, "it is now illegal to bury tyres". I showed them some remote areas he did this in and they threaten to fine him. The pissed him off a fair bit so he decided to take the project overseas.
Another way to make sure your plants get enough water in dry areas is to pull apart some nappies, you can either soak them in water first or just pull apart the dry ones, the crystals in there are great for using in the soil as they retain water but also when they dry they shrink, then when they have more water they expand aerating the soil for you. you can also add them to a vase then add some food coloring to them to get a pretty cool effect.

Very cool, I wouldn't have ever thought to use the filler in nappies in either of those ways! But yeah the govt is pretty retarded in some (who are we kidding, most) of their ideas.
