I just had a thought about how I would go if the SHTF right now - be it family emergency, house fire, or TEOTWAWKI. I'd be screwed. My bug out bag is strewn all over the lounge because I've been redoing it - updating clothes etc for growing children. I have no idea where my phone is, the children are dressed appropriately (thankfully) but all I'm wearing is gym pants and a nursing singlet. I know where my jacket and shoes are but have no idea what the toddler has done with her sneakers. Hubby was the last one to use the nappy bag (also my BOB for the kids) and I don't know if he's restocked it. If I had to bug in I'd be slightly less screwed - but only slightly. I ate all the jerky I made a couple of days ago *shame face* my food staples are running low and I'm waiting on a bulk order of organic goods through my co-op. My Coles order is due tomorrow morning, and getting fruit and veg is on my to do list for today. We'd be able to make do for a little while with what food I have, but water is really the only thing that I have sorted right now. Next week I'll be organised again and have much better chances. Sigh. I swear I'd be much more satisfied with stuff if I didn't know about preparing - ignorance is bliss. So, tell me how you'd go if the SHTF right NOW (as in literally, as you are reading this) and all you have is the stuff on you or stuff that is easily accessible. You can either bug out or bunker down regardless of where you are (work, holiday etc.). You DON'T have the option of getting home if you aren't there already.

Oh man ... you mean I'm stuck at work and all I have is my lunch and water on me and that's it. Not fair. I should have read it when I was at home as that's where everything is Are well, I guess I will enjoy my guinness pie ... can I least have power to heat it up. If not I'll have to sit on it. Can't eat cold guiness pie ;-)

What a great post SR!
I actually discussed this last night with my OH after watching the news. It showed a person that was arrested, had a "location hit list" so to speak for an explosive device with one of the locations being way to close to home. Newcastle.
If it happened right now, id be worried as you are BUT i think we'd bear a little better than what you have stated above.
MOST of our preps/gear is where it is suppose to be, which is a bonus.
Food, i feel i dont have enough. Water we would be ok with.
EDIT: The above is based on being able to drive away in our 4WD.

Would be pretty screwed! At work, at least a couple of hours away from home by public transport + driving.
In a SHTF scenario, our office has lunch fridge and a well stocked beer fridge. Could bug in for a short time only. Could scavenge from nearby shops though. Getting home would be walking (if public transpot goes down) about 130kms.

Hmmm, well I'm at home, so that's an advantage, but I'm kind of in the same boat as SR. Finding the 3 year olds shoes is always a challenge lol. As far as food etc I'd be screwed thanks to P.P. lol. I have seeds and rice and a few bits n bobs but that's not exactly going to last long enough to get a crop to maturity. And if we were to bug out, even more screwed. :/ but that said I know plenty of survivalist shelters traps etc so I think we would survive, just not thrive as well as I'd like, lol

I am at home today so it wouldnt be to bad. Food we have about 8 weeks but only 2-3 weeks of meat. Water is a mild concern but if I had a couple hours waening I could fill baths and whatnot.
Security isnt to bad between firearms, bows and everything.
Main issie is power. I have no source of power at all. Not even a bloody camping gennie.
Also injuries, my fak is almosy nonexistent so that needs work as well.

I'm at home right now so I'd be good until the golden horde from the cities showed up. If that happens I'd probably go down in a blaze of glory and a pile of brass.

Well i'm at work, have some limited gear in the Ute, have a five pack of noodles in the locker and water, so if I cant take the Ute I will have to foot it, it's about a two hour walk tops. Only issue is I am wearing a bright yellow shirt and a bright yellow fleece style jumper (HI-VIS safety wear) plus side is I am wearing well broken in boots that I can walk in all day.
I figure I'll be alright for the journey home, once I get there I don't have enough cooking/heating fuel though. Thanks SR you just made me realise my mistake, what a great thread.

I have to admit, probably not as well as I'd like. I think if I had 15-30mins things would be better.
I have got a new car/BOV, and a new house, stuff in a storage shed, so I'm a little all over the place atm.
But with not too long, I think I could load up reasonably.

OK i reckon Bug in covered for 3 months food Bug out same again with caches stocked with food, 3months plus tents, blankets, chairs tables etc and water supply. Easy drive to BOL plus have factored walking with caches at mid way points as mentioned in a previous post. Black out box for power outages stocked and ready Multiple med kits everywhere Pandemic box ready Constantly need to go through my gear and tidy up stuff as i tend to get sloppy sometimes and just let things build up. Then i have to factor in Murphys law which steps in and says that the one with the most training and gear is the first to cark it.

Took the words out of my mouth - I'd be screwed too!!!!! I've been madly packing for our move in 6 weeks time, and I've already packed all my gear and it's somewhere in boxes in my shed!!! I think after reading this I'll make a 4 day pack to keep in the car - just in case!!!

At home at the moment! 4 to 5 months worth of food FAK stocked Vitamin and medication shelf full Bug out bags ready Lots of candles, torches (hand crank and battery powered includes radios) Ways to cook food and start fires, fire pit, dutch oven, billy cans and metho burners with fondue set! Also thermoses Clothing for child Tents x2 fit two people and lightweight Water tank
Lacking good power source (hasnt really been a priority for me) Security needs work. Need more water stored inside. Have drunk most of the wine (this is very difficult for me to store)

I think we would be OK, possibly for many months in all respects except food (a few weeks there I would say) because we've been pretty slack of late. We don't have a real BO option right now (truck's batteries are flat), another area we have got slack in. For a couple of $1000 I could fix all this, but I guess we are taking a bit of a gamble and doing other stuff like the container house, that's really a long-term SHTF task, important but it's not like we don't have somewhere to live. Can we do this again in 1-2 years

i reckon do it once a month, whoever asked this month PM someone to randomly ask next month, give us all incentive to improve on where we are or be called out on it!

I was thinking of doing it randomly but asking the next person would mean one person isn't in the driver's seat and it's more random - different hours of work etc.

I reckon we would be struggling after a week, and maybe even before. So much work to do. Part of it too is being caught between the bug-out/bug-in conundrum. My heart says heading for the hills makes sense, but my head reckons staying put may be the most practical. Either way, I need to start getting serious about all this. About the only thing I am confident we have enough of is basic FAK gear. Other than that, we're going to get hungry and thirsty after a few days. Probably should reload a bunch of brass as well, just in case.
