A little off topic but all of us should learn how to filter water (see homemade filter thread ) and learn how to make a proper latrine. Also, as stated before on this forum, buy the book where there are no doctors and where there are no dentists.

Truthfully, If it happens now with us at home!!!!! We are ok for 18-24months!!!
If I was out in the car...well it's just a long walk home!!! But with my BOB and SG in the car I would be fine to get home!

18 to 24 months is impressive!!
I would fair abit better today, working from home. Bugging in we would probably be good for a month or so. Less if electricity goes down as we would lose our freezer. Don't have a gennie or solar set up yet

That's just from our stash! We have 3-4 months food in the pantry at all times...before we need to hit the stash...forgot about the pantry...LOL

Actually I've been thinking of late that we are pretty well prepared for any likely event, at least short-term ones in the order of a few months with ROL in place. I'm working on stuff to make it better but mostly we are good.
The same cannot be said for a long-term WROL scenario, I am way short of that preparedness level.

I am at home today so it wouldnt be to bad. Food we have about 8 weeks but only 2-3 weeks of meat. Water is a mild concern but if I had a couple hours waening I could fill baths and whatnot. Security isnt to bad between firearms, bows and everything. Main issie is power. I have no source of power at all. Not even a bloody camping gennie. Also injuries, my fak is almosy nonexistent so that needs work as well. okay, taking the above as a starting point: My first issue would be turning the meat into jerky! - do we know how to do this? Secondly, water: If you could fill two bath tubs with water would it become undrinkable in, say, two weeks? 4 weeks? How long would the water be drinkable for? ** Note: asking a minimum of questions to try and come up with quality answers! ;>

If power went out there are very old school (like pre ovens even) ways to make jerky, over a fire on a rack. This is believed to be one of the first ways to preserve meat that wasn't too be eaten within hours of a hunt

As for the water i'm not sure how long until it turns bad or goes stagnant but probably not long, however if you keep plain unscented bleach on hand you only need a couple of drops per liter. I like the 21 rule, 2 drops for 1 liter. 2+1 = 3, so wait 30 minutes. it's not perfect and I didn't invent the rule so don't hate on me for it. Food is okay. Lots of water in the tanks but don't have the pump or filter I want. Medical needs a clean out and restock. Ammo is unusually low. Fuel storage is not at desired capacity. Have no alternative electricity... At all. I know... I'm sorry haha
A lot of these things are going to have to wait until I return from travelling next year. Prepping can be done on a budget but when you want quality med supplies and case slabs of factory ammo things are never cheap. Thinking I can diy a small solar unit to charge AAs and usb sanity-items like ipod.

Bug out.....Struggle town but could Survive, Bug in......No issues. I'm not keen on leaving my home at all as everything I have done is aimed at staying exactly where I am without worrying about SFA!

Re jerky, can use a dehydrator, or even an oven. Think there are some recipes in the food section

I remain fairly quiet as I am not even a half bottle on the subject and don't want to dilute the conversation. ;> For instance, on a youtube video I watched today a comment (in question form) came up about dehydrating chicken in one of those dehydrators with fans and heating elements etc...: the bloke who put the video up said there were too many problems with drying poultry so he never entertained the idea and of course we all understand I am only touching the surface of a subject I simply don't understand. .. of course I will check the recipes yet I suspect the whole area of preserving meats needs careful attention to detail...

Too true - I would not even bother with poultry with contamination issues. With red meat, it is basted/cured/soaked ( however you do it ) with spices and salt. The salt is a preserving agent, thereby reducing bacteria. I've done it a bit, and have had no problems at all. Also, as you said, meat needs careful attention - cleanliness is paramount, from your hands to every tool, work space, what ever you use.

I found a place that sells Mono Sodium Glutamate (MSG) I wonder if that would come in handy for curing the meats? Not good for you but oh so tasty I have been told.
