Just wondering who here lives on the coast, or near a river system and doesnt include fishing/tackle as part of their preps.....
Ive been fishing since i was a young kid, now in my early 30s so ive collected a lot of tackle over the years, more than i need : / But i realised there might be some coastal dwellers around that would never have cast a line in their lives, not realising how easy it can be to catch a feed of fish. One could easily catch enough to feed a family/group in under an hour with little effort, a simple lure like a Twisty or even a home made jobbie like a piece of straw on a small hook will entice species like herring and gardie.
these can be had at Kmart or Tackle shops for a couple of dollars....
These home made jobs would cost pennies per lure
Add in a bottle of Fish/Tuna oil to use as a berly (fish attractant) and the Herring, Gardie and even Whiting would be yours for the taking. Just dig a litle hole at your feet and pour some oil into it and cover back up, let the waves and wash do the rest.....or even mix the oil with some sand and throw it out to your hook.
What fish scraps you have left over would be great as bait for the next food gathering mission, alternatively you could let it rot and use the Maggots that would soon be abundant as bait. For bigger meals you could set up a drop line and leave it over night, or just for a few hours even, leaving you to attend to other duties... Just add a bigger hook, some weight to keep it in place and one of the Herring/Gardie, perfect for a small shark or Ray.
All this tackle would easily fit in a small tin for your BOB or Pack, add in some nylon fishing line on a smal handreel and you have a break from the Rabbit, Roo (other game meat) that youve been chowing down on for weeks/months lol
Just some thoughts i had while staring at my pc screen....

Great post mate, will have to try those home made ones soon. I carry a telescopic fishing rod with a tackle box in my Prado as well, just in case, cause you just never know!!!!!
Loved your idea!!

Yeah the straw lure works great for herring. Especially the fluro green ones....not sure about Vic mate, but it couldn't be too hard to find some bread and butter species!

Okay someone wanna school me on fishing equipment, it's been a while. And by a while I mean 15years and I don't remember much other than standing on a pier with a rod while I didn't catch anything haha. I'm looking at freshwater fishing, be a good excuse to take the hilux and I could throw a rifle in the back if I get bored of fishing. I've found two options that mean my affordable-compact-lightweight- effective mentality, though I'm not sure about the most important part. Effective, will either of these two options be effective? - The telescoping rod
- The Hand caster EDIT: Had a chat to a mate, he said these are okay behind a boat but no good for what I'm thinking Now obviously telescoping rod will be heavier, and larger. And also need a reel attached so it's going to be even more expensive. However the handcaster is probably going to be harder to use, and more effort to use. Is that about correct?

Thanks for the post antiag, hadn't thought of making simple, cheap lures like that.
I am no expert fisher, but do enjoy getting out and wetting a line when I can, usually stick to freshwater, but the folks live on the coast so head out after snapper and whiting when I head down there. I don't eat fish, but the most of the family do so its purely just for relaxing and enjoyment. In saying that, I would eat if I was hungry enough haha
Austemplar, you looking at rivers, lakes or streams? Personally I would stay away from hand lines, they can be used, but are pain if you want a cast a fair way or are catching decent sized fish. If just dropping off a pier they are OK.
If looking at a telescopic rod, try to get a decent one, have had a cheap one break on me before, very annoying when a decent fish is on the other end. You can also now get rods that break into 3 pieces, which are pretty handy.
As far as lures etc....I would stick to the basics for a start. Grab a couple of hogback spinners (good for redfin), some smaller spinners if after trout and a stump jumper or something like that aswell. Again not an expert, just what I have used and had success with

Thanks Frank, I'm now looking at a 3 or 4 piece rod. I'm told that Shimano make quality gear. I'm not really sure where I'm planning on fishing or what types of fish are there... I'm like a kid in a toy shop at the moment. Dunno what I want or why but I know I want something.

Great post antiag21. When K-Mart had all there fishing gear on clearance, i purchased a few hand lines @$1ea a few pkts of assorted sinkers and a hand full of different hard body lures and spinners. Spent around $10 in total. These all live in my BOB. Great post.

Thanks guys.. . Can't be much help in regards to fresh water fishing I'm afraid. Haven't done any at all, ever. Put definitely a 3 piece rod over any telescopic rod, even the expensive ones are craps. I'm a daiwa man myself but shimamo do make exceptional gear....

Daiwa is good gear antiag, same with Shimano. Used to have a Daiwa rod, but unfortunately snapped the end off in a car door.....not happy hahaha. Shimano have a pretty good range, I have a Raider rod at the moment which is I find quiet good. Also don't mind Abu Garcia gear. Comes down to personal preference, how you think they feel in your hand and most importantly how much you want to spend.

Someone want to pitch me an inland fishing purchase shopping list with everything I need for less than $200?
Can't be single piece rod, it's got to be able to go in a pack. Less weight is always better.

Avoid BCF if you're going to be asking for advice....DUDS Plus, you don't know how lucky you are to be able to just throw your rifle in and go hunting. Currently the only place my rifle goes is to the range. WA firearms laws suck.

Hahaha I agree with BCF and the staff (for our local store anyway), I use them as an example only as they have a comprehensive product list with prices on the net.
