"Many households may lose access to water, electricity and food stores during emergency events such as floods, storms, cyclones or bushfires in Queensland. The following pantry list will help your household to prepare for these events. The list outlines the food required for two people (aged 12 months or older) for seven days and is based on the Australian Dietary Guidelines. Items do not require refrigeration, special preparation or cooking. Households should adapt the pantry list for people with food allergies, special diets or other specific food requirements." www.health.qld.gov.au/disaster/html/adult-pantry-list.aspI really liked this list - very straightforward list of what to buy and store, and I like that its based on the dietary guidelines. They also have lists on what to store if you have babies etc.

Yeah good stuff. Thanks for posting. I may just have to print that out and file it away for future reference.

I know I've got enough food to last us a couple of weeks, but I doubt it'd be very nutritionally balanced.

Thanks SR, most people don't have the right combination of food in there pantry for daily calorie intake.
For people new to prepping/preparedness this is an important message! Looking at serious preps, protein and carbohydrates and veggies/vitamins need to be addressed in ratio for a healthy diet! Also comfort food needs to be in abundance! Yes chocolate and bad stuff needs to be included to ease the tension that a scenario/disaster will bring.
This is not the time to worry about weight!!!! Daily calorie intake in a crisis will rise from say 2500cl per day to 3500per day under stress! Adrenaline is released into the body under stress and sugar will help to lessen the effects of Adrenaline on our bodies!
Good short or long term foods for storage are Dry beans, white Rice, dehydrated veggies and potato, powdered milk, bread flour/wheat, Buck wheat, Rye, rolled oats and most legumes! (short list...LOL)
Buying these items in bulk is the cheapest way to go...giving you 12 months supply or more for your family! Stored in Mylar and kept cool will last for years, so you don't have to worry about wastage!
$2000.00 sounds like a lot of money, but will give you enough food for a family of 4 for 12 months! (eg:takeaways for 4 for 1 year= $960 minimum, if one person buys 2 coffees a week for 12 months = $468, =$1428.00 with out Cinema, pub or holidays!) So no not a lot of money for peace of mind!!!
Water is another problem, weather you rent or own, a 5000lt polly tank is around $600, with a filter will give you all the drinking and cooking water you need for 12 months!
Sorry about the novel...LOL
