Long story short, next year I'm gonna be doing a a bit of travelling. Sort of all over, backpacker style.. Climates and terrain will vary from city to desert, and from bloody hot to bloody cold.
What precautions would you take prior to going and what precautions would you take along the way?
What would you take with you? Limitation is one backpack. I'm thinking around the 60L mark.
What wouldn't you take with you?

Australia? Or overseas? I suppose it'll depend on which countries, and their import laws - so knives, medication etc may be an issue.

Overseas. Current country list looks something like... Indonesia, Turkey, multiple countries in Europe, probably somewhere in South America and a couple states in the USA.

remember fresh socks and jocks mate I think 4 of each should give me enough time to find somewhere to wash them in each place.

First off, enjoy the trip! I would check if you need any vaccinations before going. Pretty much anything can be bought along the way, the main thing I making sure you have a way to pay for it. Cash, credit cards, travel money card etc stored separately and securely.

Sounds like an awesome trip.
Hmm.. off the cuff.. I agree with Frank on the vaccinations prior to the trip..plus an epirb or sat phone if you're planning to spend lots of time off the beaten track.
