This has kind of been covered in the thread Where do you store your food stash?? but I thought I'd start a new one because I want to know what are some weird and wonderful places that you have heard of (not necessarily that you use) that people can store their preps (in and around the house)? I'll start with a couple that I've heard recently - - Behind the couch
- Inside the couch (thanks You Must Enter A Name)
- Under the bed (with bed raisers for more room, and those bed skirt thingoes to hide it)

Odd that I know this. That bed skirt is called a valance If your bed is an ensemble (Has a base and mattress separately and no "frame") you can't really store stuff under it as the clearance to the ground is about three inches. That ensemble base piece is a hollow frame though, same deal as the couch, modify it to suit. You would be looking at taking the top fabric off and inserting some heavy ply or particle board for the base etc though.

Thanks SR, you could never hide anything from even an amateur grade search using these methods but it does give you the best use of your space. Also ever considered making the kickboards in your kitchen removable and hiding a cash box under it?

I have seen that, but as an extra drawer not a place to hide valuables.

Ok, so my question to your question is what are we storing?
Does it need to be hidden or are we simply trying to create more room?

So damn cool. I love the book key, and the fact that it's designed to look like 2 pieces pushed together to account for the extra width in the middle. Very clever!

Somehow, I don't thing that that bookcase would pass muster for Australian gun safe standards... Sure it may be 150kg made of solid wood, but no key or combination lock...

As no one has made the suggestion, the ceiling space, if you have a pitched roof that is.
get some heavy ply wood, to cover your roof battens, using underfloor insulation that is out on the market now, under the roof, and then use that space as storage, you will of course need to look into some sort of venting system as well to circulate the air, and keep things cool and dry.
Also, for quick access, you can get an attic retractable stair system, not sure where, but a google search should give you the info you need.
If you are smart, you can camouflage the entry, by renovating your ceiling to have tongue and groove look panelling. hallways are the best for this, as the space is just the right width, and it makes it easy to look like it does not exist.
