A few of us have had similar thoughts around creating some kind of transport to make it easier to bug out on foot with kids. I thought I'd share my rough ideas here and invite people to do the same - 2 heads are better than one and all that These are all just random thoughts about it floating around my head, so I'm sorry if this post is a bit disjointed. My idea is based around a trolley/trailer I could use for shopping at the local markets as well as bugging out with the kids. I'm hoping I'll be able to get the parts free/cheap and bodge it all together myself. Hubby has some welding skill so we should be okay. These are my needs: - Breathable rainhood - I want to be able to fully weather proof it with the kids inside without suffocating them.
- Off road wheels/suspension - I don't want to be stuck on paths.
- Comfy seating for kids
- Can be modified so kids can lie down to sleep
- Plenty of storage space
- Lightweight and easy to maneuver
These are my wants: - Kinetic charger on wheels for phones, small light etc.
- Collapsible
- Stair climbing wheels (http://www.rjcox.com.au/product/2786/32112/rotatruck-stair-climber-hand-truck/)
- Inconspicuous
- Fit in the car
I was thinking of starting with something that looks like one of these: A) I'd add a shorter 2nd layer to it for kid's seating and extra storage. Depending on final product it could be very conspicuous though, and don't know how I'd get that in the car. B) Inconspicuous and easy to handle but no where near enough storage, and I'm not sure how easy it would be to modify. C) I really like the collapsible side if this but am doubtful it'd be durable enough: D) I like the versatility of this one with removable/stacking storage containers and seats. Would involve a lot more work though. I'd love to see the ideas you have you got around your vehicle, and hear any feedback for mine.

The wagon I'm building will be like this but bigger as I'm using it as a blue print, I'll be adding a 2nd wagon with pedals and/or a motor.

Don't know, I don't have a drivers licence so a car is out, also a car won't help if theres an EMP or fuel crises.

According to allot of people most cars will be unaffected by an EMP, again Pheniox knows about that one, fuel crises is real threat though. I wonder what kind of horse contraption you could rig up to bug out with the kids. Anyone out there know how to ride a horse? I can vaguely remember, it's been nearly twenty years though

If you could get one an old trotters sulky would be ideal as they're light, large radius wheels to make them smoother and better in most terrain, and you could adjust it to have storage, added seats, plus someone could ride the horse when needed I grew up with horses and have no problem stealing one or two should the shtf, and know how to make improv tack

Good point on the horses, I might see if it's possible to make the wagons horse friendly and I also know where I can get some horses. Dose anyone know much about horse floats ? Like how light or heavy they are as I could use 1 of those instead if they aren't to heavy.

Or you could go old school and use a Travois like this one i made up to carry some bulky gear to a camp spot i found near the beach. It was two klicks from my car and i didnt want to keep doing multiple trips with my bad knees. You stand inside the front cross bar and let it rest against your gut. Grab the handles and away you go, Worked a treat

I imagine sand would be a pretty decent surface, or did it sink too much?

Nice going, wasn't pheniox17 working on something along these lines too? Yeah I was/am looking at a pram, space is less than most options here but it looks like a pram... Part of the blend in policy

The frame of a pram may not last long on the rough terrain though, the pram I used for my son only lasted about 6mths as I was taking the short cut to his grandmothers place. The frame of the pram broke and it wasn't possible to fix, we tried to tie it up so we could still use it but it didn't work well after that and in the end we just got a new pram. So prams are only good for roads or paths and such, if you won't to use a pram then don't put anymore then 20kg in it.

TBH I haven't given it too much more thought, thinking those stupid 3 wheel ones, with some light reinforcement to the body, as it doesn't have to fold down for said purpose, but its use is to transport luxury/extra campsite items (like chairs, power, radio, extra water etc) Its still on the drawing board... But it needs the purpose before hitting it

But no good in the rainforest. Too may snags and too narrow tracks.

StepfordRenegade why not try combining A and B. Put A on the back of B, both can fit into the back of a car if needed too. Just a thought anyways.
