Just reading up on Solar Water Disinfection using PET bottles and the first thing that popped to mind was incorporating a Mylar space blanket in the mix. Ie, do everything else normally, but place the pet bottles in the sun on top of a mylar space blanket. Any excess space blanket can be angled to act as a reflector to get more sun into the general area of the PET bottles as well. The way my rather rusty brain is working is: wouldn't any of the UV/IR that goes all the way through the bottles - be bounced back up and back into the bottles for another trip? Sort of the same principle as sun burning your eyes when on the snow/water/above the clouds due to the additional reflected sunlight? Am I overlooking something?

Household solar drinking water disinfection, or SODIS, is a simple, low-cost method that involves filling clear plastic bottles, such as old plastic drink bottles, with water containing diarrhea-causing microbes and exposing them to direct sunlight for several hours. Don't use glass as this filters the UV rays!
Ultraviolet radiation from the sun and a temperature increase inside the bottles inactivate pathogens, making it safe to drink.
Yes Mate, the extra heat that is reflected will help with lessening the time it takes to kill pathogens! But you can use bleech and boil water if able to! SODIS is fine in an emergency but having say, H2O purification tabs,Some plain bleech or a life straw in your kit will allow you to be better prepared!
