I put out some store bought raw peanuts a week ago in a pot-next week plan to sow the seeds I collected from the last crop. Just checked them, and they have all sprouted roots - time to transplant to a larger pot.

Finished the spring sowing program today. This summers crops consist of: 3 varieties of eggplant: thai round, thai long green and a long purple type from Taiwan. Some in greenhouse and some outside. cucumber on an upright tube trellis (greenhouse) tomatoes on upright tube trellis (greenhouse) and bed trellis (3m row) peas (experimental) on horizontal tube trellis (2 X 3m rows) green beans (2 X 3m rows) Carrots (3m row) Coriander (experimental) (1.5m row) Parsnip (1.5m row) 2 varieties of Zuchinni.(some in greenhouse and some outside) 6 plants of yellow bullhorn capsicums (greenhouse) a few plants of basil (greenhouse) Asian Water spinach (in a big plastic tub full of drift soil enriched with manure from the chook house.) A few peanuts sown out among the eggplant and zuchinni. Mint plant in a pot.
Of course sowing is the easy part - de-weeding, liming, working up and mixing chook manure through the soil and acid flushing the irrigation lines is what requires the effort.
I'm waiting to harvest daikon seed from a couple of plants I sowed back in February - They are nearly 6ft tall now! also due for harvest in next few weeks are 2 X 3m rows of potatoes and 4 X 3m rows of broad beans.
Cut the lemon grass clump in the greenhouse back to 10cm high (it reached 6ft as it ran to seed) Lightly pruned all the stonefruit - which are experiencing erratic bud-burst due to warm days negating night-time chill hours. Pruned 8m row of table grape vines, pruned and fertilised the raspberry thicket and gave the citrus a good dose of trace element mix now that they have started their spring growth flush.

My small balcony garden was completely killed by a week of hot weather recently. Have sown a batch of various leafy greens, carrots and a few other veg last week. Was pleasantly surprised to find that many of the seeds have already germinated and going strong. Hopefully will get some good growth out of the last of the warm weather, as we should be going into autumn.

I placed all my spring seedlings under a small tunnel greenhouse from bunnings 2 weeks ago. The main reason for doing so was to get the seedlings going while we wait for the earthworks to be completed where our new veggie garden will go. After yesterdays several inches of snow, I'm very glad I didn't put put those seedlings in the ground yet!

Harvested 2 pots of spuds - didn't grow real big, most were middle finger to thumb size, with a few fist sized ones thrown in - they were the ones I planted from store bought scraps. Probably 3-4 kg in total. My broad beans are raging, though the winds on the weekend sure knocked them about - another week and they should be ready to harvest. Snails demolished my pumpkins, so off to bunnings in the morning for more seedlings and snail bait.

)...snip... Parsnip (1.5m row) ...snip... do you buy parsnip seedlings or propagate from seed? I've tried growing it and can't get seeds to sprout - summer, winter, indoors ... just nothing! From three different types of parsnip seed. Never had so much trouble with anything else except Rosemary!

Another 2 pots of spuds - on the smaller side, but another 1-2 kg. All from store bought spuds. The ones I got from seed potatoes are just starting to turn yellow, so another week or so and hpe to see how they went ( Dutch cream ). Another punnet of Qld Blue Pumpkin, and a few pkts of snail bait to go with them.

Planted blueberries today. Am after other bush sized edible plants that can handle shade too. Any suggestions welcome.

Dug up a plot of potatoes today - really not too many - got more from those in pots.
Have a small iron sided garden bed from Mitre 10 - 2 rows of corn & 3 rows of dwarf beans just coming through.

From three different types of parsnip seed. Never had so much trouble with anything else except Rosemary! From seed. The seed must be fresh - it looses viability fairly quickly. Likes some warmth in the soil to sprout - I usually sow in March - but once the seedlings are up they are sensitive to too much heat or dryness and the soil surface should be kept moist ALL the time until the seedlings are about 5cm high. Try sowing fresh seed, 10mm deep, direct in place, into a moist (not wet) soil. Give it a water at sowing to settle the soil and an hour later (when the surface has drained and isn't muddy) cover the row with a plank of wood. Don't need to water the bed after that for a while - just flip the plank and check for germination every day after about day three. The plank will keep things nice a moist without being too wet. When you see lots of seedlings coming up then remove the plank. It may also be your seeds are actually germinating in the garden but pests (which really seem drawn to parsnips and carrot) are mowing them off as soon as they show above the ground. Also - be aware that it is wise to wear gloves when coming in contact with the leaves. I've ended up with blisters the size of 10 cent pieces all over my hands due to a chemical in them which activates in strong sunlight to generate rapid sunburn.

My parents have heaps of raspberries. Will try them at the back fence. Wife loves raspberries, so a win there. My daikon have grown and are flowering now, but no tubers. Suspect this is from the shade as they are straggly. Carrots are doing well in the shade though.

The hot windy weather has really put my fruit tree seedlings under stress - see which ones make it.
My tomato seedlings ( black Russian ) are doing well, and ready to put in the garden this week. My herbs have flopped - only a few basil seeds and 1 dill seed have emerged - three packets of seeds didn't work that well.

Found a couple of finger-limes at Bunnings today, so they will be going into the orchard.
