Maybe it Russia is working out the timing and location of all the aircraft sent to intercept them. Israel did the same to Egypt with devastating effect in the 6 day war right down to the morning tea breaks.

Its the old cold war crap, was only a dozen or so planes in this "large" group

IMO, Is this a seeming repeat of WW2? East Germany on the Western Front and Japan on the Eastern Front but nowadays it is Russia on the Western Front with China on the Eastern Front?
Russia could be feeling and testing the readiness and capabilities of the region which China is currently doing in our side of the world.
