As many experienced preppers know the intensity of your preparations can wax and wane! There are many reasons why a waning period can occur, from family issues to financial to just plain ole preparing burnout. Recently I have been in a waning phase due to family concerns but the last few days the need to prepare has been growing again. I have found when you start up again it is like when you first began, things seem exciting and you find there are new and wonderful items to purchase or skills to learn. I am looking forward to the next phase of my preparation journey and hopefully I will be even more organised!
Please let me know if you have experienced a wax or wane cycle in your preparations and if you have come out of a waning time what are you looking forward to purchasing or learning?

Great post.
I found myself completely overwhelmed a few times when I was starting out with prepping - but each time I considered those who directly depend upon me. I have precisely zero desire to watch my wife and children die a painful death of dehydration, starvation, or a multitude of other causes.
One thing I do find beneficial is to alternate preps - a time of building up stores, a time of learning theory, a time of acquiring tools, a time of practicing skills. Of course I try to do some of each thing regularly, but sometimes a big focus on a particular aspect of preparedness can help me get ahead.

Alternating preps is a great idea Mr Pete!

In the past i had a spasmodic preparation attention span. Had a lot of time early last year with a shoulder op and really cauGht up on the theory and videos and as I got stronger put plans into action. This year I have been much more consistent and have got a fair bit more support from the boss as she see the stuff happening. She even suggested buying slabs of bottled water from aldi and questioned me on our stocks when I said it was already covered. So at the moment I would say I am in a wax

Been "a prepper" for a bit over 5 years and of course theres times were for whatever reason I've been distracted or prevented from furthering my preps. Or even when I went on a deployment with the army and my physical preps were over 4000km away.
That situation shows why knowledge and skills are highly valuable because you take them everywhere with you and nobody but time can rob you of them.
I had a car crash a while back and that stripped me of every spare penny. That was just when I was new to prepping and gotta say that stalled a lot of things in my life.
Doesn't matter how side tracked I get, I keep being reminded of the need to prep and so I'll never completely stop.

Absolutely. Physical preps are only ever as good as the skills one has to use them.

Same as Mrpete, Alternate my preps. Buying and rotating stock, going out in the field to practice skills or just to get out and recharge the batteries. In the downtime or at work scour the net for something new to try.

I still consider myself pretty new to the prepping world, so haven't experienced much waxing or waning although family and work issues certainly can makes things difficult at times. So far I found the forum and researching on the net handy when I can't do any physical prepping due to working away and when I am home trying to get as much done as I can. New toys always help aswell haha

The wife and I have a system to stop that, we use lists. 1/ list of things we need to continually stock up on, ie: food items, replace what you use plus 1. 2/ List of items we need, starting with the cheapest, then most important regardless of price. 3/ Save for big ticket items (find big ticket items at cheapest price, my wife's fav hobby, she is like a tigress, she stalks the item, waits for just the right time, then pounces and goes for the kill. So far she has never paid full price for anything). 4/ Study and research items, techniques, skills. 5/ Practise skills on regular basis. 6/ Do away with things that cost money that we do not need.
Weekly, we work on our budget, to find areas we can either save in, or areas we can earn more money from. Daily, we look for new things to learn, at least one new thing each, we then study this and then pass it to the other. Make it a game, make it your hobby, passion, obsession (choose another descriptor, whatever works for you to keep you excited). Keep things fun, why would you do it if you stopped enjoying it. That's the big killer for preppers, we get dragged down in the drudgery of the task, instead of realising that it can be dang fun while at the same time, save your life in the end. Always remember why you are prepping.
Anyhow, that's my simple thoughts on the subject.

My biggest issue was feeling overwhelmed. I made lists of those things we needed if we lost power, like lights, heating, cooking, water and although each category has another category inside that, ie WATER - water tank - 1000ltr eBay - check; then timber for stand check; debris sieve - eBay check; new guttering and lockable tap - final job before filling it. I sometimes feel its like having a house within another house!! Hubby is taking care of these things and we try to allocate $50 a week. I'm concentrating on the food storage. One thing that hubby did was show me where the sewerage thingy was in our yard. IF we loose power, the pumping stations will only have backup generators. They will need fuel. If there is an issue, sewerage will not be able to get away and will 'back up' into houses via floor waste, toilet etc. If this happens, the last thing you want is untreated sewage in your home!! Depending where it is, the cap on the sewerage pipe will need to be broken off. This might mean you have raw sewerage for awhile in your yard, but even though its dangerous etc. it's better than thru your home. Also, check out where your neighbours are - hopefully their outlet doesn't run next to your fence. Our list includes a portable toilet and there may come a time when waste has to be buried, but hygiene will be most important to stop the spread of disease. BTW. There is live enzymes 300 that you can buy to put in portable toilets. Does anyone know where you buy them? Chemicals will be used initially, but once you use these little critters, you don't need to use chemicals as they break down waste naturally.

Yeah I have a prep-jo I've noticed. Stress at home seems to affect if badly tbh. But when I feel overall determined it comes back with a vengeance! ^_^
