Hey Everyone,
So it looks like these drones are going to become a standard part of our lives, with basic ones costing as little as $50 anyone can get their hands on one. Now I have 2 questions that I would like to put to everybody 1. How will the possibility of someone using a drone in your area change your prepping or alter your OPSEC plans?
2. Do you think there is a place for these devices in a preppers arsenal?
ill get the ball rolling
1. Up until recently I have been fairly relaxed with OPSEC when it comes to equipment or preps in general in my backyard, my yard is enclosed on all sides with high fences with neighbours that I have become half decent mates on 2 out of 3 sides. Recently however I have been more concerned about the idea that anyone with these drones could very easily be mapping and scouting peoples properties. I am not talking big brother, or even the criminal element, I am just referring to local people dicking around with these having a bit of fun. If/When SHTF they may remember the house down th road with the vegie patch, water tanks, jerry cans and various 'expirements' out the back and could consider them a worthy target. This has caused me just to be more careful and not leave anything out in the open where people can see it overhead.
2. I think these drones, especially decent quality ones, could very well be an important part of our future plans. With a good quality drone you can scout other peoples yard (see point 1), perform general recon for hostiles, and have an almost automated early warning system.
What do you guys think?

Slingshot loaded with magnets? Chances are some re magnets will wreck any tresspassing drone. Alternatively a high pressure hose would do a good job too.
In terms of passive defense measures, perhaps you need to build some covered areas for your preps and experiments... even just putting a tarp or a sunshade cloth over some things

High intensity spotlight that has a very narrow focus. Cover your preps, so that thermal cameras cannot penetrate. Agree with slingshot with magnets.

Drones could be useful in a bol, but they need to operate at a high altitude and for decent time frames...
So if I had a "fortress"/ bunker then a drone will make part of the security plans

One concern I have about using a drone is if they're followed back to our BOL. It may just alert someone to our location, whereas otherwise they may not have a clue.

Here is why you should use birdshot with prejudice!

I cannot express how fully converted to the use of drones I now am.

Not a fan of drones and their increasing use. I can see the point of them and the benefit of them, but I am not keen on how easily available they are for anyone just to cruise around sticky beaking into peoples yards. Our privacy everywhere is being eroded and these are just another example of that.
To answer the initial questions: 1) Probably won't alter my prepping. Water tanks and vege gardens need to be outside, but pretty much everything else is indoors. 2) Can definitely see the benefit of them for scouting and checking on situations. If the SHTF would be handy to have something you can send out to have a look around. Downside is if they are noisy and could be followed back to your location.

This is something I have been thinking about this year.
I can see a long range electric glider/plane fitted with a FPV (first person view) system as being a very useful tool.
The advantage of a electric glider over other systems is you have a much longer run time than say a quad copter. The glider is also much quieter and can be almost silent at times when you may need it.
One of the models I have been looking at has up to a 15km range.
Why do I want one? The ability to see what is going on around an area of several km's can be VERY valuable. Examples 1. Scout the road ahead for blockages 2. Scout for places of interest 3. Scout the area for other people or threats 4. Monitor live stock 5. Inspect property and boundary fences.
I'm sure there are many other useful uses as well.

This is one of the aircraft I was looking at. team-blacksheep.com/products/product:512Not a really cheap setup but I wouldn't trust the setups that only cost 100's and the price is mostly for the once off gear ie a transmitter, receiver and FPV gear. The actual plane body itself if you crash and damage one is relatively cheap at about $100 US I think I would like one though that is more of a glider so I'm still looking around.
