Ok so Christmas is coming, we are all planing big lunches, family time and a more than a few cheeky beers or wines am I right? Half way around the world (In some cases just north of Australia actually) we have troops deployed keeping the peace, rebuilding communities following natural disasters, helping with various humanitarian projects in areas of famine etc and of course what everyone knows the ADF for, we have troops in active combat. They do NOT get Christmas off, some might but I doubt it's all "Tools down, the plague/drought/enemy/tsunami/etc will wait while we have a cuppa" So if you can, and I see that I have posted this a little late, but if you can maybe have a crack at sending these people a package. You can tailor it for a man or woman, even specify the region you wish it to go to E.G Iraq, Timor, Africa etc, etc. Even sending an email or letter of support would go a long way, lets face it we have it pretty damn good in Australia and we owe these people allot. www.robert.com.au/pages/christmas-for-the-troops.phpandrewnikolic.com/2014/11/guidelines-for-supporting-our-troops-at-christmas/Both links had the relevant information, for the record I don't know who this Stuart Robert is, I just Googled "send christmas packages to australian troops 2014" and he popped up. Please pay special attention to what can and CANNOT be sent as it is very strict.

Thanks for that Ron! The other day my son was in Macdonalds (I think) and some ADF troops came in. He told me about it later and asked "I was wondering what to do, should we stand up for them?" I replied that maybe he could go up to them and shake their hand and thank them for their service. I was really proud that he was thinking along these lines and this may be a good thing for my son to do.

AHH I see, conflicting information one says 5th other says 8th. I think I'll aim for before the 5th. I read the 5th, but then realized the Stuart Robert one says 2011... 2014 seems to be the 8th. Going to talk to my church about putting together a few packages. I'll get my Sunday School kids to do up some letters... Thanks for posting this, Mr. Burgundy!

ok package is complete. Thank you to those ex and existing service people who helped me with some ideas and advice.
We ended up settling on one box due to budgetary constraints, I made the decision to do a package for a female as I thought they may not get as much support.
Elle Magazine Puzzle Book (All kinds, maths, word puzzles etc, etc, it is aimed at adult) Scented Hygienic Wipes Beef Jerky (Big bag from Costco) Mylanta Antacid Chewable Tim Tams Cadbury Chocolate (Large block) Holeproof Heroes Womens Explorer socks 3 Pack Bonds Socks Various toiletries like luxury shampoo and conditioner, moisturisers and the likes. All little sample sizes that the Mrs has been collecting from her Belle Box thing Nail clippers and Emmery boards.
A handwritten Christmas card, full of well wishes and gratitude for their service.
Feel free to ponder what you would or wouldn't have sent, but unless your ADF, ex ADF or sent a package this year I'll take constructive comments only. However if you fall into one of those three categories I'll take any advice I can get for next year.
The package is nearly 3kg, it is brimming and the box barely closes. I will have to pay for postage on this one, maybe next year I will go leaner.

I also had a friend of mine whose brother is currently a soldier ask him what they like in a care package... Here's what he said:
Toiletries! Toothpaste, toothbrush, shaving cream, razors, deodorant, soap, a facewasher. Lollies- like mintiess or snakes, jelly beans... We can get gum and peppermints, so nice lollies are wanted. Little fruitcakes for Christmas Magazines - ask some newsagents if they can spare some of their returns = free... Some books - anything to fill the time.

You are awesome Scoutmum and I just stole a few ideas for next year I managed to jam in pack of disposable razors into this pack too. I ended up having to pay for postage but meh. 2kg seems like heaps but the magazine the Mrs picked weighed 600g on it's own. It really is heartwarming to see people get behind our troops, they deserve all the support and respect we can give them.
