If you have to replace your alarm get a photoelectric type
Qfes is always suggesting it

also make sure you get a 240v hard wired one with an inbuilt battery, you can get ones that last up to 10 years now so there is no excuse.
My family are all sparkies and we have seen families lives ruined because they didnt have a simple smoke alarm. If you dont have the cash to spend on a good one, a crappy 9v one is (slightly) better then nothing

For me, that's what prepping is about - the small, everyday things. Smoke alarms, kitchen fire ext, kitchen fire blanket. Household FAK. I know people who've lost their home to fire, and I'm stuffed if I ever want to experience what they went through.
I'd rather spend top dollar on a great quality fire alarm and buy a basic knife than vice-versa (of course, only until I can afford to buy a great knife too).

While preparing for TEOTWAWKI is more 'fun,' I am much more likely to be affected by the little things (power out, fire, etc.) so that's what my focus is on. Incidentally some of the stuff that I have to prepare for the little stuff will also stand me in good stead if the S did HTF - like my gas camp stove.

Or there's this top-of-the-range model...

A trip to Bunnings later and we are the proud owners of 3 shiny new photovoltaic alarms (plus a whole lot of other random things, I am just not to be trusted in that place).
