So the current pre-collapse of the russian economy has me thinking, if the aussie dollar was losing value every day, what would I spend my savings on?
So for the scenario... It's safe to assume that websites will not honour any sales as the currency is dropping quicker than they can get products to customers so all online trading has ceased. As has happened in Russia with many sites shutting down for the time being. So physical stores only, and let's assume that it's still safe to go shopping. Police still maintain the rule of law.
Let's say that the banks are setting an ATM limit of $1000 a day per person and for the sake of a little competition, we all have $5000 saved. Physical banks are closed, credit cards are not being honoured.
However there is a twist. Every day the prices of goods doubles. So for example if you want to buy a a 20round box of .223, on the first day it would be about $20. But by day 2 its 40, then 80 then 160 then ny day 5 it's $320.
If you have $20000 in cash in your home safe, you're not allowed to play with us cause your mum said we smell like cabbage soup.

OK I only have 5k @ 1k a day ATM/efpos (as I have a 1000 limit on daily spend)
Day 1, bank withdrawal of $2500 Purchase extra Gerry cans, and fill Purchase extra food and water (even more) Purchase some extra first aid supplies
Day 2, pay 600 to rent (as I'm on a lease so my rent won't change till its up for renewal) Spend another 200 on fuel/storage Spend 200 on smokes and alcohol
Day 3, get alt power sorted, don't need a lot but can work out something with a 1kbudget
Day 4, spend the last 500 in bunnings on food relacement supplies, and water collection parts...
This will give me a good chance to weather out the storm, but good topic

Food, ammo, fuel, tools, in that order I think. Too late to buy more guns.

I would have enough of provisions etc. so I would go straight for barter items and cigarettes would be top item. At least half on smokes. Quarter on canned goods of various tradable contents and quarter on grog.

Changed my mind. I would go all smokes for trade. I remember what I would go through to get a smoke in hard times before. Anything.... I reckon they would be gone quick and fools will give up useful items for a quick nicotine fix.

Sorry - wrong spelling - no 'i'. Ozpig.
Just looking for a link graynomad and read that the inventor died about 6 weeks ago. They had just left a camping show and was in the moving campervan and she went to close the door and she fell out. How tragic.

Interesting scenario!
I feel like I would be fine already, my only issues are security not in term of individually but rather how to repel a gang. Having said that, there's certainly things I would get with the extra $5000!! *ching ching*
Day 1. $500 on powder and primers - for bullet trade and resupply $240 3x45kg gas bottles. - stealth cooking [no smoke] $100 Fertilizer for plants - resupply $50 on heirloom seeds - trade and resupply. $110 on Sugar - a trade good for preserving/beer/spirit making
Day 2. $350 Ozpig. - I'm digging it! I do already have a place to set a fire, but $200 2 loads of wood to feed the pig $50 Another axe $400 A still
Day 3. $650 on Fuel and Jerry Cans $350 on sugar, tomato paste for still
Day 4. $200 on barbed wire $500 on timber and hardware for barricading/general use $300 on box tubing for reinforcing
Day 5. $500 on fuel and jerry cans, top up car fuel tanks $240 3x45kg gas bottles $160 on sugar, tomato paste for still $100 on fertilizer
-----
- I've got 6 bottle of LPG for cooking, which would be easily enough for a year or more. - I've got back up fuel [timber] for cooking - I've got fuel for the generator or relocation if need be - I've got a good years supply of fertilizer. - I've got an alternative income source [still] if that becomes necessary. - I've got the supplies for at least year of growing. - I've got additional supplies to reinforce the house
