So who got prep-related stuff for Christmas? We had lunch with good friends who are moving toward a more off-grid, self-sufficient lifestyle and who share many of the same concerns and ideals that we do. We talked properties and looked at some rural properties on the net and Mrs Nighthawk made the quantum leap that she would deal with the extra driving to live in the kind of place we eventually want to get set up. So my Christmas gift (apart from my mate's .243 that I'm picking up next month) was approval from the Minister of War and Finance to actively pursue a property where we could be off-grid, grow much of our own food, and maybe even generate some income from the use of the land. How about everyone else?

It isn't prep-related but it could be if you think about it. I got my heart broken for Christmas.

Oh Mandy, sorry to hear this. Does that mean the move to Oz is on hold? No. I was planning on moving before I met him. It would only be on hold if I don't get into any of the universities.

3 books, not the electronic versions -------------------------------------------------- The Survival Medicine Handbook: A Guide for When Help is Not on the Way [and it's very good] Retreat Security and Small Unit Tactics Contact! A Tactical Manual for Post Collapse Survival Let us know what you think of those books please The survival medicine handbook isn't good it's 'excellent' from my 2 hour flick through. It's for preppers by a prepper doctor. He doesn't do the usual thing of ... 'seek medical help', which you learn in first aid classes [which is exactly what I would do if I could!], he includes a ton of information relating to what you might do if things were SHTF, alternative uses for over the counter medicines and so on. He's got a youtube channel HEREThe other two I haven't got into enough, though the first is by southernprepper1 [was originally part of 'practical preppers'], ex vet and makes some good vids on youtube. I figure he's got some basic knowledge and the right perspective. The other was from a Capt in the Paras who taught rifle training... he knows a lot more than me I like to go by a little idea that I start with the source of the information I'm getting, do they have the experience to know what they're talking about? This is why I favor people like southernprepper1/mainprepper/Hibernian Son and so on in this area, and if they're writing [southernprepper1 - retreat security] or recommending them [Hibernian Son and others with contact!], I'll be reading. It's easy to get a pdf and see for yourself, though I'm a big fan of a physical book for obvious reasons. I'm sure the ranger and army manuals the USarmy puts out are similarly useful. I also HIGHLY recommend the SHTF school series [audiobooks], and reading his web page because he lived through a real life one. His observations and truth are frightening, yet highly enlightening to understand the reality of human behavior [For me even and I've been studying that for 20 years] and in so you don't remain in normalcy bias [thinking things haven't changed]. Speak of, the 299 days series is similar, [I'm 3/4 the way through the whole 10 books, in audio] in that whilst it is fictional and at times improbable, it has tons of great ideas strewn through it. The HOSSumc reviews are also helpful in demonstrating flaws and having his own.

Had asked my husband for a dehydrator for Christmas, but decided it was too expensive... Then, wonder of wonders, the day after I've told him not to buy it, an ezidri ultra 1000FD pops up on the buy, swap and sell for $40: still in the box, with the original receipt, too! We've been drying up a storm. We had a lovely Christmas Day lunch with the extended family, too: between the families, we had our own ham, chicken and turkey. We're hoping next year to have all our own veggies!

Post christmas sales at kathmandu today netted me..
Some 7x compact binoculars that seem pretty good for $20 that are going in my chest rig after testing. A 4xAAA lantern that's quite compact and telescopes out so that emits quite a bit of light. 15L drybag.
And a backpack for the little woman.. she revealed to me that, and this is embarrassing, that she doesn't have a backpack.
Now we've just started small. Something that we can take hiking and she can throw some standard things in. But it's a start.

Hey Guys, For Xmas got a new axe handle and an irrigation system as well as bunnings voucher to buy more preps from there. Old folks gave me a box of my great grandfathers old tools, saws, hand planer, hammers, chisels, etc. By the time I restore them it will be added to my preps. Cheers, Chris
