I have spent most of my life camping, fishing, shooting and keeping my pantry full! Why am I saying this....Well I am glad you asked..
I believe every one on this site and others like it..(Although this is the best..LOL) have that little alarm inside them that went off and made you think that some thing is not right with the World!!! So I better do something about it!
Not every one has had years of training with the outdoors so I thought that for those that have, we could impart what we know and use this tread to give practical knowledge to those who wish to learn!
Everyone will have different views on "How Too" so it will be up to individuals to glean what they can to arrive at what is best for themselves!
I'll start with basic camping and go from there! As simple camping gear will help with a Bug out or in!
Setting up for camping is as cheap or as expensive as your budget allows. The K.I.S.S way is the best way for me! (Keep it simple stupid).
1: Good quality Tent for all, don't skimp on your shelter!
2: Good quality Silver tarp, enough poles, pegs and ropes to secure it in a storm! (20'x12' is a good size)
3: Good quality Roll of silver rope 6mm (8mm is ok but a little big)
4: Large canvas bag to keep all above!
5:Sleeping bags/bedding, self inflating Mattress and pillows
OK, you have put up the tent (The tarp is for bad weather), and made up the beds! Next! I personal get my fire wood sorted before it gets dark and be able to cook a meal! (I like to cook and eat while it is light so as not to waste time and gas or batteries)
Next Kitchen:
1: Cast iron fry pan and camp oven, the size will depend on the amount of people! A large pot, 10-15lt. (The steel camp ovens are great as they don't break if dropped) and a kettle (2-3lt)
2: Good quality plates, bowls, cups and cutlery!
3: Kitchen utensils and a few S/S bowls for mixing damper/bread! (and a good rolling pin!) (Why? Wait for the Recipe section..LOL
4: Camping stove! Gas, kero or metho!
5: Food, drink, condiments, flour (plain and S/Raising), Powdered milk, yeast and baking powder, salt! Sauces and oil! Tea,coffee, sugar and hot chocolate! (I keep marshmallows for a treat!)
6: Plastic bowl (10lt) for washing up! scourers (green and S/S) Tea towels and dish cloth! Washing liquid!
Lights!
Next we look at lights. I have both Led lights and kero pressure lamps! Why not gas? Well the bottles are heavy, expensive and gas lights are expensive to run! With Led hooked up to a 100amp deep cycle battery and a 80-120wat solar panel, you have nearly endless light source and can re charge small things a well! The Kero pressure lamps put out about 150wats of light and you can carry them around! Keep plenty of mantles as they break when traveling!
A couple of good torches with a good supply of batteries will fill the gaps and help with night time set ups!
Personal Hygiene!
Shower tent or tarp(for the ladies!)
Make sure you have a couple of good quality buckets with strong handles! For a bush bath, I fill the buckets with water and then add enough boiling water from the kettle to take the chill of and then have my bath and then tip the rest of the bucket over me to rinse off! (How said you can't shower in the Bush..LOL)
A black plastic shower bag is great too but you need to fill and put in the sun to warm up, I find the bucket much easier!
Clothing:
Different weather conditions call for different clothes, but a few of each ready to go will make the difference between miserable and happy campers!
Good foot wear is essential as well!
Equipment:
1: Good quality knives and sharpener!
2: Bow saw, chain saw, axe, tomahawk and a couple of wedges!
3: hammer, small and large!
4: Medium size bolt cutters!
5:Zip ties, gaffer tape, electrical tape!
6: Tool box with basic tools! Pliers ETC!
7: Wire
8: S/S trace wire and fitting (to make snares)
9: Sewing kit!
10: FAK
11: Leather gloves and eye protection!
Fuel: The fuel you carry will be up to you depending on your needs. EG: Metho for the stove, kero for the lamp ETC!
I'll stop here as this is, for me, the Basic's, others will add or take away or have other Ideas! Everyone is different and will have need of different items so the sky is the limit!
Please feel free to put your knowledge and experience here so others may learn!
Before TSHTF we need to be prepared not after!
Happy Prepping,
Gary
