So I am planning my 1st hunt on my brother -in laws mates property, I ask my partner who done most of her cheifs apprenticeship do you know how to carve up an animal and would you if I bort 1 home... She replied yes if I skin and gut it before she has to see it and wants a good knife to cut it up, with my inexperience I suggested I would need a good knife or 2 to clean it up for you maybe a butcher knife kit is a cheaper option, I do not recognise any of the brands in kits on ebay.
Does anybody have any suggestions on what is a good set to get or just as good any knives to avoid or even a site or shop I could find a quality set on a budget (I know it will be at least $150 for knives that will stay sharp long enough to do the job, blades won't brake or handles fall off) I also know on my 1st hunt I probably won't killing anything not from lack of trying but just incase it's best to be prepared. Very appreciative for any help anybody can give

For skinning you will need a knife that is easy in your grip, about a 4inch blade light and easy to clean and cheap so you can have a few!
I have just bought ten cheap small light fixed blade knives for exactly that, will give them a good sharpen in the next week or so! Less than $10 each ! For boning get the boner to pick as they will be using it!

The three knives I carry when hunting (not necessarily all at the same time): Top: Bark River Fox River (approx $200) Middle: Buck Vanguard (approx $100) Bottom: Becker BK-15 (approx $140) All feel great in the hand, and hold a great edge.

Thank you for the help both good ideas, however it like the buck and the Becker might be the way to go, because I can afford them they look comfortable (im a noob to hunting anything I can't catch and hold in my hands with only my hands) and if they hold a sharp edge that's perfect.

I have been trying to show my Spanish muela and Winchester knives to ask if they will do me any good.. The muela is abit smaller but I think definitely a better knife, it's a multi purpose knife with serrated edge on 1side and a slightly curved blade, excellent grip on it. The other is the standard Winchester knife you see online for about $50. It was a present, it is big the blade looks like a Rambo knife without the serrated edge. Wooded handle not bad not great

I have the Buck good little knife, the Becker is a great knife but a bit bulky for me,hunting. I have found it better not to skimp on a good knife for hunting, they will keep their edge and make working on game easier.(Yes you can use cheap knives, but you get what you pay for!) I just bought the Gerber for $62.00 : www.cuttingedgeknives.com.au/product_details.php?pID=880 was not impressed with the sheath though! To get a good knife at a good price, this is the importer in Australia: www.cuttingedgeknives.com.au/index.phphe sells to the shops where most people buy them!

Cutting Edge are not an importer that sells to other stores. They sell direct to the public via their website. Most stores order from the official Australian importers (Zen Imports for instance who handle Leatherman and Spyderco among others). My work imports direct from a wholesaler in the US which is why I've been able to help members out in the past with good prices on great knives.

Arkane i ment to like your post but on iPad bumped the wrong button, some good options on here from all of you, I have an ban I might look up importers, nighthawk I liked the other knives better although I do have a question, I have steered myself away from that style of knife as they do not look as tough as something like the buck, how does the knife in the second picture compare to the buck in the test of time?

I've never owned a Muela, so can't really comment, other than to say I haven't come across anyone on any knife forum who uses them for hunting. As to the Winchester, there's a saying that goes, "Never use a knife made by a gun manufacturer'. Personally I wouldn't carry either of them any further than I could throw them. I've been using my Buck Vanguard since I first got my firearms licence about four years ago and it's never missed a beat. The Becker won't let me down anytime soon either. Did five goats in a row with it one time. Either of those and a decent basic sharpening stone (I carry the Fallkniven DC4) will give you years of outstanding service.

Really, it was sold to me as a multi purpose hunting knife brand new.. I must say it does look good quality though but looks can be deceiving, haven't had a chance to use either of them

Then start looking for something that corrects the issues you have with it.

Had a chat with a knife freak friend of mine, he is still looking for that perfect knife! He wants that knife he can shave with, chop trees down with, fight with, skin and gut with, split logs with and pry doors open with! and it has got to hold a fine edge! He has been looking and collecting since 66 must have over 1,200 knives but still has not found that one!
