Hey guys, I came across this knife the other day in my regular web surfing and thought it didnt look bad at all, it is a single piece of metal (including handle), 1070 Carbon Steel, a little pricey but I figure I could find it cheaper if i looked, so far the best price I have found it is $121.00 + pp, Here is a link to the amazon page www.amazon.com/Schrade-SCHF2SM-Extreme-Survival-One-Piece/dp/B0038A1VKWThe only negative is it has a hollow handle, but even that has an O-Ring for water tightness so it could be worse. This is the smaller model, there is a larger one but it is a very large knife 7.5" Blade compared to 5.6" and I have enough borderline Rambo knives. :-) Look forward to hearing your thoughts

What would you use it for? Too big and clumsy for peeling oranges or spuds Too big and clumsy for skinning/gutting Too small for chopping firewood
I have found I mostly Actually use a small blade for smallwork like peeling oranges, spuds, skinning and gutting or a small axe for bigger jobs like cutting trees and firewood!

I wouldn't if i was you, if you wanted an urban survival knife, as in something strong enough to pry open doors, break into cars/wrecks etc. you need something fairly hardy and strong. Its a good quality steel, i have 1095 Carbon Esee knives and they rust like crazy if you don't look after them. The best prevention is just regular use, or a coating. Just some thoughts for you.
For strength i would completely avoid hollow handles. Compromises the longevity, strength and its not practical.

I am just about to start testing this.http://www.cuttingedgeknives.com.au/product_details.php?page=1&pID=19333 I already have it, it comes with a fire steel and sharpener, quality seems ok, but I am yet to put it through its paces. I am currently testing a condor bush lore, its a nice knife but the steel is too soft, 1075 carbon steal. I am hoping the schrade 36 will be better.

Soft and doesn't hold an edge. Hollow handles should be avoided at all costs. This knife will break under any serious force.

I never use a knife for wood processing.. That is why I was looking at the axes.

Awesome blast from the past, this thread. Even a contribution from the legendary Arkane. I wonder how he feels not making the grade in the great Australian Militant Survivalist test. Maybe I should make him a cup that says Militant Survivalist with Failed stamped across it. You still using your cup, buddy?

Interesting axe design. The one tool bushcraft idea is ridiculous, but I think this axe could be useful.

When Mrs Frostbite wants something expensive she doesn’t book out the next few birthday gifts, she just stops running when I chase her around the house.
Last time it was a $2k eyelid tuck, this time it’s an $1800 Bettinsoli trap gun. God knows what I’m going to have to agree to when I want to buy a $45k Ducati V4 superbike. Probably the ironing for the next 10 years.

What do you think ?? (about the knife) If you got the coin... go for it....
That is a lot more than I would spend.. But then I still have a couple old ..Old Timer.. folding knives.. One virtually new stainless, one well used steel, both with the leather belt pouches..
I have a set of old Estwing hatchet, camp axe, woodsman axe.. (12, 18, 26" as I remember) I carried the hatchet in a day pack when big brother and I as young guys had hunting camps.. And even up until something less than 2 years ago now that hatchet field cleaned and processed more big game than most any cutting tool available..
