Pick a spot on a map.
Now put down your 50kls, 100kls, 200kls, 300kls distance calculator. What do you find?
I find a major jail. Lots of questions here to ask.
What would/could prison authorities do? Could they protect themselves? In a grid down situation, what if the prisioners were locked in? Or locked out? How many prisoners are in this particular jail? How many guards? How far could they get if on foot? Would you take young children into a remote area if you were near a jail? Where are the jails in each state? I know of Silverwater, Goulburn, Nowra, Berrima. What others are in NSW?

View it from a escaped prisoners perspective! They will have a destination in mind, probably there home turf! Would they even come near your place on the way to there destination? For them the fastest most direct route will be the one taken Escape get a vehicle, drive to destination They generally don't waste time getting to where they want to be, dig up money, exact revenge, etc !

420km to my nearest jail. And that's on the coast already, so no reason why any of them would be heading my way

There are several jails within about 50km of my house, but I doubt escapees would come into my area without a personal reason.

Wan other reason to rejoice about living on an Island Hole your boat and you have no escape! Third largest Island in Australia. 4500 square kilometres to hide in. Boat not really an issue.

Fortunately prisons are mainly west and north of melbourne. The closest would be Melb custody centre. There are 6 prisons between melbourne and Geelong. Including our two max sec ( allegedly )

I went to university in a town in Canada that had two maximum security prisons, a medium security prison, a minimum, and a mental institution. I still remember my first week there, we were told not to worry about criminals. Whether they escape or are simply released at the end of their sentence, they all generally want to get as far away from there as possible (as arkane said)! We were told that we were far more likely to encounter people from the asylum than the prison, and that was certainly my experience. So... (and I am certainly not try to stigmatize mental illness here!) if you are going to be concerned about prisons, you should probably also be concerned about mental institutions. Also, a while back there was a Dutch show on SBS, 'Cordon.' It was about an outbreak that starts at the national institute for infectious disease and spreads outward. I suppose another place to be potentially concerned about living near is a centre for disease control/lab/testing facility. So nice to live where everyone knows who the criminals and the crazies are.

We were talking on the weekend about how far we have come knowledge wise regarding preps in under a year. You just cannot absorb that learned info in a couple of days when SHTF. And for new preppers there is a time at the beginning where you will feel totally overwhelmed - but that does pass - as you are able to break down your prepping to what is best for you and your situation. It's going to be hard enough when SHTF; food preps and equipment are just part of it. But learning about how to open a can without a can opener, having cash on hand at all times, keeping your fuel above 3/4 at all times, how to make soap and candles, paper logs and build a Dakota fire pit, putting STIBIL in your stored fuel, keeping your pets inside and even GHBs etc etc. cannot be learned overnight. Lots of reading, practice and confidence building goes into prepping. For me, The biggest obstacle will be family members that haven't prepped trying to tell you that authority 'just wouldn't allow it' to get that bad. There will be a time when you will have to be prepared for serious denial from those you love. Shock will take its toll on many. And stark reality will bring it home quick enough.

I'd never heard of Sta-bil before, and I need spare petrol on hand. "For the whipper snipper" lol but I only use a cup a f/n or something most of the year. Thanks Matilda you taught me something I didn't know I needed to know!

Hi,
Went into my local autobarn to buy Sta-bil a while back. Sta-bil is well known however has limited capabilities and is expensive. I don't know if the product is sold in states other than QLD but my local autobarn guy referred me to an Aussie Made product called "Fuel Doctor." It does both Petrol and Diesel and is also designed for marine use (keep/expel water from your fuel store). The bloke said his family ran a servo for ages and the guy that makes this product used to come and help with their big tanks. It is a lot cheaper than Sta-bil and you get a LOT more litres out of it. Its a win win because its cheaper per unit, cheaper per litres it does and supports an Aussie!!
Also - on the topic of prisons. Prisons with electronic doors on lower level security facilities will open all doors once backup generators are depleted. Max/Supermax will only open at the Warden's discretion. Because prisoners (even dangerous sex offenders) are still "humans" they will release them from the facility if things are that bad.
You should have a fuel store of at least a tank and a half for each vehicle you have (unless you have too many cars, in which case rationalise.) The same goes for Diesel, and don't keep all your eggs in the one basket, split up your store so that if you loose one set you don't loose it all, from both theft and being destroyed (fire etc).
