It seems like forever that I have been putting together GHBs for ourselves and our adult children and our gorgeous new Granddaughter. They are not into prepping like their parents, but bit by bit they are coming on board. My Daughter is the most open to it, but the last thing I want is for them to 'close up shop' and I could never live with myself if we prepared for the two of us and left them out. To me prepping is family and family is prepping.
I came across Urban Prepper and I'm sure many of you have too. Although many of his clips are interesting, one of my biggest issues in putting the bags together was organising the different 'compartments' to make sure I had not forgotten a valuable resource or prep. First up let me say I'm an organiser. I like things to be in their place and if Hubby asks where's the dynamo, I can tell him exactly where it is. It's part of the way I function and there is probably a bit of OCD in there somewhere!! Urban Prepper takes it further and I can see a lot of you Aussie Males saying 'yeah right' about his method, but for those organising multiple bags, I find his method worthy of a mention. So all you Aussie guys that like your GHBs in one colour - camo - it's time for you to throw another prawn on the barbie.
Urban Prepper uses colour coding to compartmentise his preps. One reason is that if a stranger needed to access his bag if say he was unable due to injury etc., he could say grab out the bag that is tagged RED (first aid). The stranger would not need to rummage thru the bag, but just locate the bag tagged red. Anything to do with water, ie, sawyer mini, lifestraw, purification pills, water etc. would be located together under a BLUE tag. He actually got his subs to complete a survey to vote on linking a category with a colour. So GREEN was for food. ORANGE was for fire etc. WARNING. There IS a PINK tag!!!
Below is a PDF that he printed out for his viewers, which can be downloaded and you can view his colour coding preps on his channel. Just searching Youtube under Urban Prepper will bring up his many videos.

When you click on the above link, please wait about 30 seconds as it takes you to a new link and the information on using colour tags on what you have in your GET HOME BAGS. I also purchased the coloured tags off ebay for ridiculously cheap prices after searching high and low. Although I will probably use black zip bags to keep items of similar type together, Officeworks has a good range of bags in black and almost all colours and I noticed even clear zip bags with different colour zips.
