en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_volcanoes_in_AustraliaAbout 3 yrs ago I did some training with the Emergency Services in Mount Gambier, SA. The Blue Lake, a water filled crater that the city is built upon/around, is still classed as active. There are active emergency plans for an eruption/evacuation of the city ( pop: 25,000+). I wonder how many other dormant, but active volcanoes are around this country!

It doesn't have to be an active volcano. one of those can pop up almost anywhere on the ring of fire. Just depends on where the magma rises through the crust.

Its interesting to see that there are quiet a few whos last eruption was only 5 to 15000 years ago, which is next to nothing geologically speaking.

Interesting, I had always thought Australia was a dead country geologically speaking. Hence why we have so little in the way of nutrients in our soils and how come we've got a pretty flat country.

Interesting, I had always thought Australia was a dead country geologically speaking. Hence why we have so little in the way of nutrients in our soils and how come we've got a pretty flat country. Sth East SA, Western (lower) Victoria, all along the coast, has very rich volcanic loam from previous eruptions - it's not hard to see why these areas are a major food bowl - especially potatoes, onions, and dairy. When we lived in Mount Gambier, our soil was a deep, dark loam, fertile, and whatever we grew, flourished. Now that we have changed sides of this state, we have sandy, rocky, crappy soil, that will take a long time to build up with compost, manure, loam and fertiliser!!!!! But, no volcanoes means 1 less thing to worry about!!!!!
