July 7, 2015, 9:23 am The police union says the flow of illegal guns on Melbourne's streets is putting officers at risk after a constable was shot in the head while trying to pull over a car.The 31-year-old officer was shot in the back of the head with a shotgun in Moonee Ponds at about 3.40am on Tuesday while he and a colleague were in their police van. Police say his injuries are non life-threatening, but the constable remains in hospital in a stable condition. The head of the Police Association Victoria says the shooting shows how the availability of guns in Melbourne has made ordinary police work increasingly dangerous. "The environment of policing has changed - there's more firearms out there and it's going to affect our members every day that they go out to work," Ron Iddles told 3AW radio. In June, Victoria Police admitted guns were being found in Melbourne's northwest suburbs every two days. Police are also recording a firearms incident every six days, including seizures of weapons, armed robberies or shootings.Mr Iddles says it is an alarming trend, which he believes could be linked to the trafficking of ice. "When these officers put on their uniform last night, they didn't expect to be a target," he said. "They went out there to serve the community." The union boss says the injured policeman and his partner are lucky to be alive. "As you would expect, he (the partner) is very emotional and very distressed ... they both realise they came within an inch of their lives," he said. Source============================== The underlined area gives me great concern, particularly with such prevalence.

Assuming that these guns are not stolen from LAGOs (Law Abiding Gun Owners) — and it seems that is the case according to that senate inquiry — then this is a worry for all of us, it should not be an excuse for stricter gun laws and restrictions, at least not for LAGOs. Of course the lefties won't let something like this go to waste and AFAIK it's partly at the bottom of the recent lever-action kerfuffle.

Yes instead of putting more money into border security to stop the flow of illegally imported firearms, they greens will go after law abiding citizens

A shotgun to the back of the head and survived? Sounds like they don't really have too much to worry about if the criminals can't even get that right. Firearms stolen from LAFO's are not the problem as recently shown and the ones that are stolen contriubte only a small % and the vast majority of those are long arms. Semi auto handguns are a tiny fraction. Firearms imported into Australia are a problem, not like its hard to just look at all the drugs coming in all the time and where there are drugs there are? You guessed it guns. What is even more of a problem are the backyard/underground machine shops producing locally made illegal firearms. Many of these are full auto capable. Firearms are not hard to produce and considering the equipment you can buy for a few thousand dollars from the local machine shop its never been easier. Consider the old Sten machine gun produced for WWII, it was chosen because it was simple to make, effective and cheap at only $10 to make. imagine just how easy this thing would be to build to day for a machinist with a little imagination, plus the plans are "out there" anyway en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sten#/media/File:Pistolet_maszynowy_STEN,_Muzeum_Or%C5%82a_Bia%C5%82ego.jpg

I'd certainly want a lot more skill in the workshop before I attempted to make one from scratch.
If only I could make one from wood, concrete, or fibreglass...

Yeah I think rifling a barrel would be beyond most workshops. I suppose something like a Sten is a spray and pray gun, maybe you could get by without rifling.
Trouble is, in SHTF you can't afford to waste ammo like that and pre SHTF you certainly don't want one of these.

Making a rifled barrel is no easy feat Youtube has a few videos on how easy that is. A shotty [which was used] of course need nothing that fancy.

I'll have a look, not that I want to make one but the process would be interesting I think as I can't figure out how you would do it.

A rifled barrel would be the hardest part to make but perhaps not as hard as one would think.
In the end they don't really need it for what most criminals use them for. A drive by is spray and pray anyway.

This seems an appropriate point to mention that given the way things are heading, nothing illegal should be discussed on a forum such as this.

Apart from the guns we already know criminals are currently smuggling in ( along with drugs even though they are illegal to ) ..... it doesnt take much effort to make a " Luty gun " which requires no barrel rifling ....crims are already making them here .

But surely it's not possible for them to appear here in WA - we have the toughest gun laws in Australia </sarcasm>

this thread is starting to make me nervous. Considering what the police openly admit turns up... the criminal element is of concern.
