Both the Coolgardie Safe and the Zeer Pot operate on evaporative cooling and can keep your beer cool at your bug out location without using electicity. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zeer_poten.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coolgardie_safeI am interested in setting up a self sustaining Zeer Pot as a test on the property next time I go down there. There is already a very large oversized square terracotta pot I can use (about a meter across at the top and a meter tall) and I will place this in a spring fed stream (little more than a trickle in summer) about 50m from the main dwelling. Once this is filled with sand - I will strip the bottom of an old esky down till all that remains is the lid assembly with the inner plastic wall below it, and this will go in the centre. This means there will be no insulation in the bottom of the esky but the lid remains an insulator (and access). The plan is for the terracotta pot to draw up water from the stream into the sand where the evaporative cooling will occur and keep the "esky" (and contents) nice and cool. That is the plan though - whether enough moisture flows (sustained) through the terracotta to keep the sand wet is another story. Will just ask my folks to keep an eye on it when I return, checking to see if the sand stays wet, the "esky" cool and whether or not the entire kit and kaboodle will get washed away in winter. Should be able to edit in some pics in a couple of weeks. Edit: Belatedly realised Shineyshooter has already discussed Zeer Pot cooling over in the alternative energy sub forum: ausprep.com/thread/208/planning-run-fridge-on-solar
