Likely as a result of the cruddy drought from a few years ago, Brisbane suburbia is absolutely full of rainwater tanks. Just from observation walking too and from work, it looks like about 1 in 10 houses have them. And from living in rural Tassie I know that rainwater tanks are a dime a dozen, even in areas on town water.
I can't help but think that some of the doomsday senarios put forward out of the USA are not 100% applicable to Australia and that we may need to adjust priorities for local conditions.
Another example - all the USA doco horror scenarios of escaping the city. Here in Brisbane, I am less than a kilometer from the edge of the bush, and less than 4 kilometers from the centre of the CBD. We just don't seem to have the population density to make the really catastrophic problems compound on top of each other.
I don't mean to suggest we won't have very big problems if the SHTF, but I think the problems we have will be different from those experienced in a lot of other locations.

Rastus, i completely agree. We live in a society that is much, much different to what is depicted to the ones on DDP.
Should shtf here, i think we will handle things much differently to that seen on the likes of American blackout.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately! I wonder if the Aussies would be more likely to pull up anyone misbehaving or have we grown too much? I know there will be certain elements that will cause issues but is that culture of mateship still around or have we lost that ethic. Instead of relying on USA scenarios we need to develop our own. I mean Australia has been through heaps of disasters so we have a huge amount of case studies. During the Queensland floods looters were caught so there is that rogue element but people pulled together to help coming in from all over the place. Would that sense of wanting to help out erode as disaster continued on or would we quickly form communities and just get on with the job? Hope I'm not rambling!

It depends on the scenario i think Remmy. Short term, we'd all pull together and do what it takes to survive. Long term, it'd be every man/group for themselves. Just my thoughts.

I agree with Wayne - I think when it is isolated pockets of disaster, then our community rallies around and goes helps those people. I think it may be a different case if a good majority of the population was caught up in the disaster at the same time. Natural disaster wise, that would be very unlikely, but in the case of pandemic or grid failure... Not at first, but when you have no water or food for your family, and the government is not fully prepared, then I think you would start seeing some nasty stuff.
And I doubt either our state or fed governments have much preparation for wide spread, multi-state scenarios. I think they all rely on other states being able to help out in times of crisis with added resources.

Another difference I have been thinking about is the psychology differences in Australia with its relative lack of firearms compared to the USA.
People with firearms (doing good or bad) will likely behave differently knowing their typical threats won't have them. This could have an emboldening effect in the bad and also encourage carelessness in the good. There is no doubt the effectiveness of those armed with firearms is increased when it isn't universal.
And the people without firearms? I am guessing they will be meeker/more careful. Sure, some loser/criminal without a gun being meek seems a good thing, but also the people who would normally take up protector roles will become more cautious as well. For better or worse, you likely won't have militias forming so quick if there is a breakdown of law and order.
I also suspect it will have an effect on people travelling as well, with more choosing to bug in / wait it out. As well as being a tool, having a firearm has a profound effect on a humans decision making process because those with them feel safer, so will be prepared to take greater risks knowing they can be mitigated if things go wrong.

When I moved from the west coast of Sth Aust to the south east, I was in for a real shock!!! On the west coast our house had 5 water tanks - when i moved to the sth east I asked where were our water tanks? Reply - Don't need them, got plenty of rain here!! So, it rained every 2nd day, and all everyone did was whinge how dry it was (mind you, I was used to 2 days rain per year). Where we live now we have a large r/water tank that we use for drinking & cooking (water is very 'hard' and need a softener, which doesn't work at the best of times). I've always believed that when I buy a house, the first thing to go in is as many water tanks as I can fit in the yard - can never have too much water - but then, you make yourseld a target too if things get bad!!
