I recently bought the LifeStraw Family water filter. From memory it was about $110 delivered and can apparently filter up to 18,000L
I tested it out on some disgusting swamp water from a nearby swamp. It did it's job well, crystal clear. It has a very slight iodine taste but otherwise great.
If I was to try to pick fault in it the only minor thing I can think of is that it does not come with hooks or ropes to loop the water box over a tree branch or something to keep it up high. I made some rope handles for it myself easily.
Here is a video I made of it.

Awesome, really great Jacko!
I seen this video a few weeks, maybe even months back. Well worth looking into one.
I can honestly say, id never seen one until then.

Seems like the water just shoots all over the place....May not be that good if you have the device on hand and access to only a little bit of water and need to make the most of it.

Yeah it can go a bit crazy out of the tube though it would be no problem if I had my hands free but I was holding my camera. Otherwise I'd have just held the glass under it directly.

Nice one mate, thanks for making the vid! Is the first bit you released at the bottom just purging the system?
Ive got a couple of the portable lifestraws and have been thinking about the Family version, I reckon your vid has convinced me.

Yes the red valve at the bottom lets the first bit of dirt out for a few seconds. There is also a red rubber squeeze bulb for occasionally doing some form of backwash.

Does seem like a great unit nonetheless. And not a bad price either!

Nice one, you can put a few (thousand) litres through it before it gets clogged I understand?

The blue bucket has an extremely fine mesh, like a membrane (so fine you sometimes have to give it a little shake to get it to start seeping through). Unlike the tube type LifeStraw the mesh filter is removable to be washed. The tube part of the filter is also able to be backwashed, so they say it is rated to 18,000L.

We have been stocking the Lifestraw and Lifestraw family for over a year now and it is definitely a great product, Lifestraw is coming out with a whole range of new products so it is well worth keeping an eye on the product line.

2 litre pop bottle with a piece of string to tie it to the top part of the filter would work. looks like a good setup.cheers jim
