Who's made one of those forges, either with the large coffee cans or with an empty LPG bottle or similar?
Looking at making one, using the plaster of paris/sand mixture to insulate it, and using it to start banging on metal.
Trying to find how effective and efficient those forges can be, if they get hot enough to make steel workable and thoughts on the LPG vs solid fuel with a blower...
I want to melt down cans and make aluminium ingots and then use those to make smaller projects or fabricate bits and pieces. And I also want to try my hand at knives and axe heads.

Just last week I was watching a clip about making one from an old brake drum, It looks very simple and seams to work fine. I want to make one as I am going to do a Blacksmith's course in the new year. Christmas present from the wife for me and my oldest son.

Sorry Austemplar, I really just know what Paul does at this point I think. I planned to make a forge pan from steel but will probably for now just get a truck brake drum. Knife makers seem to favour using LPG in a closed forge (because knives are small I assume and with gas you have more control) whereas general smithing seems better with a more open forge and a blower. I do nearly have my smithy running in terms of stuff being placed and I've even been using the swage block and anvil for some cold work. Excuse the mess, it's a real tip right now because I'm still building benches and shelves for the workshop. What course are you doing Paul? I really should do one. And the invite to camp here is always open, maybe after the course you can teach me

Hey Rob, I am going to go and do a beginners course, learning how to make your own tools for the next courses there are. Once the basics are down I want to do the knife making course. They run the courses just up the road from me at Petrie. Nice looking set up you have there as well.

I'm envious of the hand-powered drill press. Nice.

Yeah I love it, not easy to find one if you live in the bush, there are often some post drills on eBay but due to the weight they are always local pickup and never in my area. I got this one in Brisbane, he held it for ages until I got down that way. It's a Dawn 611 with auto feed. I haven't used it in anger yet though
