So the other weekend I asked my Son if he would like to have ago at welding, He has tried before but he was a bit young at the time, So I had a little project I wanted to knock up so it was the perfect opportunity for him to learn. I saw a little fire pit on youtube that used old steel rims stuck together. I showed him the basics and said don't worry if its a bit rough by the time the two wheel are welded all the way around you will have it. So this is how it went. then put some small legs on and cut the door.

the made a quick hinge and a handle for the door. I as very happy with how it turned out. We still have to add a few things as I saw one on youtube with a hand operated rotisery. Here is the first burn in. I was very surprised how much heat it put out, I was expecting a little bit but not as much as it did. I just picked up a hot plate that fits over the top perfectly, found it in a mates back yard scrap pile.

That's great. I like the shape of the rim for the job; a skillet or wok would sit nicely over the hub while allowing airflow through the outer holes. It would also be great for a campfire; I'd imagine it would radiate heat in all directions. Just a little heavy to lug around...

Bet he enjoyed the project. Any guy who doesn't like to weld hasn't tried to weld. Break out the acetylene torch and you probably couldn't get him to stop. An excellent skill to have.

Good work. MIG is a good setup for learning on as compared to ARC welding lol
